Australia Web Filters: Unfair?


Australia is getting set to introduce nationwide content filters on the internet there, which they say will strictly block criminal material, but which critics say will curtail free speech online.

As one researcher said, "Clearly there is a need to protect younger and more vulnerable users of the net, but one concern is that it won't just be illegal websites that will be blocked..."

This is the latest chapter in the ongoing tug of war between legal and government authorities trying to limit internet capabilities in various countries, and the younger generation of internet users who believe all media technology should be unfettered outlets for free expression. Over time, the younger generation may win out, but there will be a lot of bumps in the road until then.
