90 Lashes for Girl


A controversial punishment is being handed out to a girl in Saudi Arabia, as a teenage girl will receive 90 lashes for allegedly assaulting a teacher at her school. The girl is 13 years old, and faces the lashing for alleged assault after she was caught by her teacher with a camera phone, which is not allowed at the school. She also faces two years in prison.

Saudi Arabia is one of a small number of countries still employing corporal punishment, which includes flogging or lashing as well as possible amputation of limbs. The country has faced harsh criticism from international human rights groups for continuing these practices, especially in ways that target women for questionable reasons.

A Saudi judge says a teenage female will receive 90 lashes and spend two years in prison as punishment for assaulting a teacher at her school. The teenager could be spared with a pardon from King Abdullah. The girl's name was not immediately available.
