Hitsville, USA: Nickname of Motown Headquarters

50 years ago today, Berry Gordy founded the Motown label, and went on to build perhaps the greatest pop music empire of all time, at his Hitsville USA Headquarters in Detroit Michigan.

From that original headquarters Gordy started from humble beginnings, but went on to build the greatest label of the era, spawning countless classic songs and albums from some of the most revered singers of the century, including Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder. Not to mention Rick James.

When asked about what inspired him to start the record label that spawned so many hit albums and bestselling classic CDs.(and tapes and 8-tracks) Gordy said: "Every day I watched how a bare metal frame rolling down the line would come out the other end a spanking brand new car. Maybe I could do the same thing with my music ... create a place where a kid off the street could walk in one door an unknown and come out another door a star."

"Hitsville U.S.A." is the nickname given to Motown Records' first headquarters. Located at 2648 West Grand Blvd. in Detroit, Michigan Hitsville U.S.A., formerly a photographers' studio, was purchased by Motown founder Berry Gordy in 1959, and converted into both the record label's administrative building and recording studio, which was open 22 hours a day (closing from 8 to 10 AM for maintenance). Following mainstream success in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Gordy moved the label to Los Angeles and established the Hitsville West studio in Los Angeles, as a part of his main focus on film production.
