Crystal Lewis Son Dies

A tragic story from Virginia, as a six year old boy mysteriously died while being treated at the dentist, in what is usually a routine procedure. Now his mother, medical authorities and investigatores are asking, why did this tragedy occur?

The boy, Jacobi Hill, was taken in by his mother Crystal Lewis for a usually routine procedure to have caps put on several of his teeth, but went into cardiac arrest after being put under with anesthesia. The orthodontists say this is a safe oral surgery procedure generally, and they do not know what went wrong in this case. The boy reportedly had asthma and possibly some other conditions, but the cause of his tragic death is still being investigated.

According to anesthesia experts, "Quality and safety in anesthesia is usually monitored by analysis of perioperative mortality-morbidity and incidents.1-4 However, these methods have limited sensitivity and specificity for quality and safety issues."

Authorities are investigating the death of a 6-year-old boy who underwent treatment at Virginia Commonwealth University's dental clinic. Crystal Lewis said her son, Jacobi Hill, went into cardiac arrest Tuesday after undergoing anesthesia while having caps put on several teeth. He was pronounced dead a short time later at VCU Medical Center. The state medical examiner's office is conducting an autopsy. Lewis says Jacobi had asthma but no other known health problems. She says a pediatrician examined him Monday and concluded he was fine to have the dental procedure.
