Blogs Worth Reading

Sasha gets nice reviewing various hip-hop mediocrities.

Likewise for Julianne on "You Got Served".

The Abstract is just nice in general.

Chico nails the real atrocity of the Superbowl telecast.

I see via his link to us that Jonah Peretti, source of the legendary Nike emails and co-creator of BlackPeopleLoveUs.com, is now editing a new site dedicated to streamlining the very activity in which we are currently engaged.

And a link from these guys means I am officially in with the in crowd, right?

Other new blogs of note: here and here.

Other Wacky Hijinks

Adbusters is making a list of Jews, for some reason?

-----------

Some Canadian folks did a more honest version of those anti piracy ads we see before every movie nowadays.

-----------

JD Lasica says we should pay close attention latest FCC Rulings.

-----------

Abstract Dynamics has more on the Ozomatli Incident.

BTW, I figured out the MT error listed in my last post was caused by a link to Outkast's new video, as .mov file.. once I took that link out of this post everything returned to normal. Is there some reason why linking to a very large file would cause Movable Type to choke on a new post? Or is MT just sick of Outkast?

Raqiyah Mays Gets Slot on Hot 97

Raqiyah Mays, who got fired from NY's Power 105 for proclaiming herself a "racist" on the air and detailing her distaste for interracial relationships, will be heard on Power's archrival Hot 97 this Sunday from 1 to 5 PM, according to the press release her people just sent me.

If nothing else, this sure is a clever ratings ploy by Hot 97's boss Tracy Cloherty. Raqiyah's comments have sparked lots of discussion here on our site and elsewhere, and I'm sure lots of people will be tuning in on Sunday to hear some sparks fly.

I'm curious to hear which Raqiyah Mays will show up.. will she be using that blunt "I'm a racist" language of her original remarks, or the diplomatic "I just have concerns about the community" tone she switched to after the fact.

3/28/04 EDIT: Listening now.. there's no discussion going on, and her on-air demeanor as she refers to the controversy is really irritating and self-congratulatory. I'm turning to Felix Hernandez Rhythm Revue on 98.7 KISS.

Blogging While Black at SXSW

Full Circle has a detailed blow-by-blow of SXSW's Blogging While black panel, starring Tiffany Brown, Tony Pierce, Lynne Johnson, Jason of Negro Please and (All About) George:

Jason: I was telling someone about this panel and I said Tony was going to be on the panel and they said, why, he's not black. My personal sight, you see my picture. Negro is the first word. If you google Negro I'm the fourth or fifth page. Everyone who comes on my site knows what they are getting. But as editor for )____ my picture is not there. How does my race affect what I write on LAIST.com The Devon Brown case in LA, our two local papers, wrote about his funeral. I find the Daily News coverage to be culturally insensitive, retarded. I mentioned that and someone commented that you had probably not been to a black funeral. That would not happen on my site because people know who I am. Not on LAist. In the blog world it is easy to assume it is a white man. How does my race affect what I write on a site that is not about race?

Chris Rock Crossfire

A lot of talk about Chris Rock lately in blogville, coming from some very different angles.

South London's Soul On Ice blog digs the hip-hop sensibility at the root of Chris' comedy:

...Part of what makes Rock so interesting as a hip hop comedian is his measured perspective of the culture. In an interview with Nelson George on the Bring The Pain DVD, Rock insists that his 'Niggas Vs Black People' calling card merely traverses ground already covered by Ice Cube, Chuck D and KRS-One and cites his exposure to NWA's 'Straight Outta Compton' as a life-changing moment which taught him that "you can say anything... and get paid for it."

Yet despite the reverence for hip hop culture, Rock refuses to deify it or excuse its more questionable moments. In his 1999 follow-up Bigger And Blacker, Rock ridicules the way the deaths of Biggie and Tupac were described as assassinations: "Martin Luther King was assassinated," says Rock, "Malcolm X was assassinated. John F Kennedy was assassinated. Them two niggas got shot!" For some it's a harsh assessment, but then it's kicked with that "say anything" conviction that's well, intrinsically hip hop...

But Danyel Smith, after the Oscars, was somewhat less than enamored:

This Week's Essential Reading

My esteemed colleague Dan Charnas started a blog, and the first post is a monster. Behind the scenes accounts of the birth of commercial hip-hop radio, and the revolutionary origins of the "Baby Got Back" video. A long read but well worth it. (Also peep the mp3s and the yoga tutorials.)

---------

Elsewhere, The Music Issue reminds us why all eyes should be on Vatican City:

Thing is, this is an important, world-affecting regime change with no democratic input and the potential to lead to further conservative standpoints (on women in the priesthood, family planning, gay-rights, celibacy etc), or even brutally regressive stances that will no doubt curry favor with our charming right-wing 'culture of life' and conservative social systems in Catholicism's worldwide followings. In other words, I'm not one for praying, but I today I pray for a new, liberal and progressive hand driving the Pope-mobile.

And O-Dub recounts an experience I have all too often, except for me it usually involves Bobbito, Slug, or Gil Bellows from "Ally Mcbeal"

This Week's Essential Reading

Adisa Banjoko tells how the Source tried to bring him in for a hatchet job on Jimmy Iovine. "Long story short, they tried to use me to attack Iovine, I would not do it and their new Editor, FAHIYM IS THE REAL SLIM SHADY..."

----------

Susie Bright remembers Andrea Dworkin.

----------

William Jelani Cobb remembers Harold Cruse

----------

O-dub + Junichi = Poplicks. Stack and attack!

----------

Andrea Duncan-Mao has now been assimilated into the Blog Collective. Resistance is futile. (yes i'm talking to you, Chairman.)

And America Out of New York

Back from the ever-tasty Montreal.. My circle of McGill-attending friends is mostly moving on this year, so this might be my last time up there for a while.. I'm gonna miss y'all! Peace to Anne, Amy, Neale, Jon, Jessica, Tomiwa and the rest of the crew (and of course Gramophone Sean whom I've got pegged as blogger most likely to become world famous author.)

No Poutine this time but I did test the bagels, and my fellow NY-ers, I think they've got us on that one. Impressive enough that I'll politely ignore the attempts at pizza. Also took a million graffiti pics, digitized and webbified when time permits. And got the following books at Cheap Thrills for a total of $30 Canadian:

"The Rise and Fall of a Proper Negro" by Leslie Alexander Lacy
"Harlem: the Making of a Ghetto" by Gilbert Osofsky
"Soul Sister" by Grace Halsell (a female "Black Like Me"!?)
"Scuse Me While I Kiss the Sky: The Life of Jimi Hendrix" by David Henderson
"What To Listen For In Music" by Aaron Copland
"The Recording Angel: The Experience of Music from Aristotle to Zappa" by Evan Eisenberg

Plus the book I've been dying to read for the longest, "On the Real Side" by Mel Watkins. The prologue has already planted the seeds for about 5 new posts...

---------------------

.. perhaps including one on this week's Big Blog Topic, which I'm just catching up on today. No time to jump in now, but I thought this previous colloquy covered all the bases. And I'll just mention.. no, let me not get started.
