Belafonte Calls Bush 'Greatest Terrorist'

CARACAS, Venezuela - The American singer and activist Harry Belafonte called
President Bush "the greatest terrorist in the world" on Sunday and said millions of Americans support the socialist revolution of Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.

Belafonte led a delegation of Americans including the actor Danny Glover and the Princeton University scholar Cornel West that met the Venezuelan president for more than six hours late Saturday. Some in the group attended Chavez's television and radio broadcast Sunday.

"No matter what the greatest tyrant in the world, the greatest terrorist in the world, George W. Bush says, we're here to tell you: Not hundreds, not thousands, but millions of the American people ... support your revolution," Belafonte told Chavez during the broadcast.

The 78-year-old Belafonte, famous for his calypso-inspired music, including the "Day-O" song, was a close collaborator of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and is now a UNICEF goodwill ambassador. He also has been outspoken in criticizing the U.S. embargo of Cuba.

Chavez said he believes deeply in the struggle for justice by blacks, both in the U.S. and Venezuela.

"Although we may not believe it, there continues to be great discrimination here against black people," Chavez said, urging his government to redouble its efforts to prevent discrimination.

Belafonte accused U.S. news media of falsely painting Chavez as a "dictator," when in fact, he said, there is democracy and citizens are "optimistic about their future."

Dolores Huerta, a pioneer of the United Farm Workers labor union also in the delegation, called the visit a "very deep experience."

Chavez accuses Bush of trying to overthrow him, pointing to intelligence documents released by the U.S. indicating that the CIA knew beforehand that dissident officers planned a short-lived 2002 coup. The U.S. denies involvement, but Chavez says Venezuela must be on guard.

Belafonte suggested setting up a youth exchange for Venezuelans and Americans. He finished by shouting in Spanish: "Viva la revolucion!"

Acne is a very difficult aspect of being a teenager. It's hard to feel confident about doing out with friends or going on dates when your face has blemishes. You don't have to just live with it though; there are ways to prevent and treat acne.

Acne is the term for blackheads, whiteheads and pimples that occur on the face, neck, back and chest. Many people believe that acne is caused by eating greasy foods, chocolate, lots of soda, or having dirty skin. However, this is not true as it is mostly caused by oil glands that become overactive during puberty because of hormone stimulation these. The severity of the acne will depend on the hormonal reaction. Acne can also be caused by vitamin deficiency. Adults can get acne from these same causes.

The number one prevention of acne is to wash your face. Washing your face will get rid of oil buildup and dead skin, which can clog your pores and cause acne. Gently wash your face twice a day using a mild soap. Do not scrub hard. You need to be sure you wash your face after sweating a lot. Sweating can clog your pores. Be sure you don't overwash your face though. Overwashing can dry out your skin and irritate acne you already have, making the situation worse. If you have acne on your back or chest, try not to wear tight clothes because the clothes will rub against the acne and make it worse.

The challenge of change for Blacks
By Brian Mintus

As a black person who was raised and lives in Nova Scotia, my personal observations and questioning nature qualify me to draw conclusions regarding the life and welfare of blacks in the province.

I have concluded that what is needed are new political vehicles that will allow blacks fuller participation in the political process and improved access to government funding for economic development in the black community.

First and foremost, what is needed is a new African Nova Scotian Secretariat or Council to unify the black community and allow it to speak with one voice. One attempt to do this was the Black United Front (BUF). Unfortunately infighting and the fractured nature of the black community in Nova Scotia led to the dismantling of the BUF.

As the wheel has already been invented (albeit poorly), I believe the ideology behind the creation of BUF represents the best potential for creating a new entity. Blacks need to learn from the failure of BUF, make improvements that are pertinent to the present time, and rebuild. We need to get back to our community roots, rid ourselves of the weeds and establish a tree that will flourish in harsh soil.

Our inability to cooperate and work together for the good of the community has been well documented. I know that finding fault will not cure the problems of distrust and insecurity. The most positive approach is to develop a grass roots philosophy and build anew.

Negative self-image is not purely a black problem and we need to understand this. Only positive attitudes - not self-righteous ones - will allow us to take charge of our social/economic future and enable us to build a more promising one for our children.

To do this, we need to voice our opinions regarding change and societal development. Silence will only reinforce the status quo. I believe blacks are inadequately represented politically in Nova Scotia. They have no unified political voice and they are unable to access government largesse as easily as other communities.

The experience of hitting roadblocks when dealing with government is the usual experience among blacks. The competition for the limited funds allotted for community development through government agencies exacerbates existing problems of distrust and community in-fighting.

The existing structure of government agencies and particularly systemic discrimination within the HRDC are counterproductive to achieving social self-determination for people of African descent in this province.

Given that the economy of Nova Scotia is unusually dependent on government funding, changing this situation is essential for the social and economic well-being of Blacks in Nova Scotia. The government is the most important source of development funding in the province and exclusion from adequate access to these funds has seriously harmed the Black community.

Creating a strong black political entity means empowering the black youth and allowing them to take part in building their future. Black youth need to know how to deal with government and be qualified to participate in community development. Achieving this will require the help and input of the existing representatives in the black communities of Nova Scotia. They must be recognized and respected for what they are capable of contributing. Working with both young and old together will allow us to create strong black political representation and allow the community to work together for change.

I firmly believe there is systemic discrimination against blacks in Nova Scotia as a whole and in particular within government. Data from Statistics Canada shows Nova Scotia near the bottom of the list of destinations for newly arrived immigrants to Canada and discrimination is the prime cause of this perception of Nova Scotia as an unfavorable destination.

As well, Nova Scotian blacks who have returned from living in cities such as Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal regularly express disdain and disbelief at the discrimination they face here. They see only lack of opportunity and bigotry and the end result of political apathy. This has been the case since blacks were brought into this quagmire via deception and slavery.

Before developing a concrete action plan to change this situation, I would like the personal opinions of Blacks in the community. The input from all community representatives would be necessary to put forward a blueprint for change.

The complication I see here is getting enough unselfish support from the black community for the preservation of all the fine contributions blacks have made to society in general. I believe that if we speak with a unified voice we will succeed in building a worthy future for our children.
I believe suppression crosses many borders in a society and no community is stronger than the roots, which hold it together.
