Kent Desormeaux wins Kentucky Derby
link

With Kent Desormeaux at the helm, Florida Derby (G1) winner Big Brown made a powerful move at the top of the stretch and drove home unchallenged to win the $2,211,800 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum Brands (G1) by 4 3/4 lengths on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Dutrow had not been shy in the days leading up to the race about telling anyone who would listen that he had the best horse in the field and could see no way the bay Boundary colt could lose the 1 1/4-mile first leg of the Triple Crown.

Dutrow, whose checkered past and boisterous personality have turned off some in the industry, was jubilant as he won with his first Derby starter, who became the first horse to win from the 20th post since Clyde Van Dusen in 1929.

“Everything,” Dutrow said when asked what the victory meant to him and Kent Desormeaux. “I can’t really describe the feeling all of us have right now.

“What you saw out there today … that’s what’s made me so confident.”

Ridden patiently by Racing Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux, Big Brown, the 5-to-2 post-time favorite, made a sweeping move on the outside at the top of the stretch, veered sharply to the rail, and accelerated with authority to the line to become the seventh unbeaten Kentucky Derby winner and first since Barbaro in 2006.

Reports: Mariah Carey Nick Cannon Married
link

Nick Cannon is cast as Mariah Carey's lover in her new video — but has the superstar diva given the young actor a considerably bigger role in real life?

According to several published reports, Mariah Carey, 38, married Nick Cannon, 27, on Wednesday. Neither Carey's publicist nor Cannon's manager returned requests from The Associated Press for comment.

If the pair did wed, it would be a whirlwind romance. Word that the two were seeing each other surfaced in the last few weeks. Saturday, Carey was seen sporting huge diamond ring at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of "Tennessee," in which she plays a waitress. Cannon was at her side at the party. Speculation then swirled that the couple were getting engaged.

Latina.com was first to report that the two got married, at Carey's home in the Bahamas. Friday's New York Post also had the pair wed and E! Online quoted a relative of Cannon's as saying that he called his family and confirmed the news.

"He called us and told us all about it. We are happy for him. If that is what he wants then we are happy for him," Linda Cannon, identified simply as a family member, was quoted telling E!

People magazine's Web site reported Friday that Carey had obtained a marriage license in the island of Eleuthera, in the Bahamas, where she has an estate.

LSU better off without Ryan Perrilloux?
link

It's obvious Ryan Perrilloux's ship was sinking in February. I addressed it. It's really a shame. Hopefully he goes to a smaller pond, refocuses and resurfaces again some day.

I love the move on Les Miles' part, and everyone at LSU should as well.

Had Perrilloux stayed, he would have officially become larger than the team, which is cancerous for a group that won the national title and lost a group of players including offensive leaders Matt Flynn, Jacob Hester and Early Doucet as well as Ali Highsmith, Glenn Dorsey, Chevis Jackson and Craig Steltz on defense.

With a new group of leaders comes a search for identity and the focus shouldn't be on a guy who was allowed to bend the rules.

But Miles knows this and that's why he made the right move.

LSU quarterback Ryan Perrilloux has been dismissed from the team. Head coach Les Miles says that Perrilloux "didn't fulfill his obligation as an LSU student-athlete." He is declining additional comment.

LSU said Friday that Perrilloux is expected to finish out the spring semester at the school.

Perrilloux ran up against the law and team discipline with regularity at LSU. He was on the fringe of a counterfeiting investigation and was caught trying to enter a Baton Rouge casino with a false identification. That got him suspended all of last summer.

He also was involved in a fracas at a nightclub in November, but he was cleared of wrongdoing. link

Kodak EasyShare Z1275</h!>

...Kodak now has some 12-megapixel models in its compact range, and the latest one is this, the Kodak EasyShare Z1275. Basically a higher resolution version of the 8-megapixel Z885 launched back in March. The Kodak EasyShare Z1275 features a 5x zoom, f/2.8-5.1 Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon lens, a 2.5-inch LCD monitor and optional manual exposure. On paper at least this sounds pretty impressive...

Smokin Em Charters was a planned charter boat service in Florida that would offer such special services as boats full of topless women. Wait, are we sure there's no rap group involved?

Smokin’ Em Charters Offered Topless Women, Nixed by City

link

Fort Pierce, Florida city officials has banned a charter service that offers topless women on board. Smokin’ Em Charters is run by husband and wife team Harold and Kathi Coombers.

The Coombers have had the company for 8 eight years, but first began running the boat with topless women in January. They say the topless women come aboard fully clothed and wait until the boat is 3 miles out into the water before they strip down to be topless. The topless women help run the Smokin 'Em Charters boat and serve food and drinks.

City officials forced Smokin’ Em Charters to leave the city marina because they were disturbing the family atmosphere in the marina.

I've been blogging for a while now about how these mad scientists need to take a break and watch Robocop, paying especially close attention to when the ED 209 loses control and kills an innocent civilian during a demonstration.

And now it seems Robocop, in its infinite wisdom, as come true. An Oerlikon GDF-005 cannon went wildly out of control during live fire test exercises in South Africa, killing 9 people and wounding 14 more.

SA National Defence Force spokesman brigadier general Kwena Mangope says the cause of the malfunction is not yet known...

Media reports say the shooting exercise, using live ammunition, took place at the SA Army's Combat Training Centre, at Lohatlha, in the Northern Cape, as part of an annual force preparation endeavour.

Mangope told The Star that it “is assumed that there was a mechanical problem, which led to the accident. The gun, which was fully loaded, did not fire as it normally should have," he said. "It appears as though the gun, which is computerised, jammed before there was some sort of explosion, and then it opened fire uncontrollably, killing and injuring the soldiers." [More details here -- ed.]

Other reports have suggested a computer error might have been to blame. Defence pundit Helmoed-Römer Heitman told the Weekend Argus that if “the cause lay in computer error, the reason for the tragedy might never be found."

Robots have been roaming the streets of Iraq, since shortly after the war began. Now, for the first time -- the first time in any warzone -- the machines are carrying guns.

After years of development, three "special weapons observation remote reconnaissance direct action system" (SWORDS) robots have deployed to Iraq, armed with M249 machine guns. The 'bots "haven't fired their weapons yet," Michael Zecca, the SWORDS program manager, tells DANGER ROOM. "But that'll be happening soon."

The SWORDS -- modified versions of bomb-disposal robots used throughout Iraq -- were first declared ready for duty back in 2004. But concerns about safety kept the robots from being sent over the the battlefield. The machines had a tendency to spin out of control from time to time. That was an annoyance during ordnance-handling missions; no one wanted to contemplate the consequences during a firefight.

Fox Guest Smokes On-Air, Says Taxing Tobacco To Fund Children’s Health Is Like Racial Discrimination
