Roots "Game Theory" Album: September 2006?

The Roots "Game Theory" Album is set to be their debut on Def Jam's new "underground" or "alternative" imprint, Def Jam Left. Information is scant on the project, but here are some tidbits from various sources:

"As for "Game Theory," drummer ?uestlove previously told Billboard.com it would likely feature a track with Mos Def and Talib Kweli called "Where I Come" and one song with just Mos Def, "Workin' on It.""

on okayplayer: "..a Black Thought album produced by Dangermouse is something being discussed, according to Roots management. No contracts are in place though and with Game Theory slated for a September '06 release, we would have to think that any Black Thought project of any kind is looking more like 2007."

I am so glad the Roots decided to push their album back to 9/06. They really need to concentrate on this one. They are trying to become too alternative to which is terrible for them. I have been soooo disappointed in the last two album efforts by the group. Many of my peers are not in to the roots anymore.

I agree with the above comment, The Roots have changed it up lately. To go from Organix to the The Tipping Point you can see the difference. But change is good, let's try and seem of that "organic shit" again.

True musician evolve and change their sound. That's what the roots have done. Everyone of their CD's are special and unique. If everyalbum sounded like "things fall apart" that would get old. No matter what the roots do, it's gold.

I'm hyped on this LP. Alot of y'all saying that Phrenology & Tipping Point is wack, but Black Thought holds it down lyrically on any track. I have never heard a lame verse from this cat. Would be fresh if they brought it back to Organix or Illadelph though. This LP & Blackstar's new LP (if it ever drops) are my two mos anticipated LPs to wait for. -1-

I can't believe what I am reading! How can anybody think that Phrenology or The Tipping Point are wack??? Blasphemy!!! Yes they are different from Illadelph or Organix but they should be! You shouldn't be the same way you were at 20 when you are 30! These albums show a maturity and growth that are quite refreshing in hip hop, especially these days. Black Thought is a lyrical master! Have you heard Thought @ Work or Web? I think that if you take time to listen to the lyrics and feel the music you will realize how powerful it is.

Posted by: candibar at March 21, 2006 1:57 PM

yeah i think tipping point is sick because its more political and focuses on some important shit, and ?uestlove's beats on phrenology are sick, you can't tell me water and quills don't pump you up

Posted by: john at April 26, 2006 11:15 PM

Black Thought is a lyrical monster. All the roots albums are master pieces you just have to have the hip hop history to realize what is been done with the music.Hip hop needs the roots!Without them hip hop will be dead.

yeah, for real. maybe ya'll ddn't catch all the referances...? please. i'm still cathing em...

these r the same cats who probably thought organixxx didn't sound enough like de la soul back in the day...

they'll love the tipping point in five years, after rolling stone reviews it or somehting...

Phrenology & Tipping Point were bangin' joints...real music played on real instruments for real souls...Hip hop's equivalent of The Clash's London Calling & Sandinista!

Posted by: Dlux at June 7, 2006 10:30 PM

nobody better say nuthing bad about the roots... i'm extremely excited for the new album to drop... 'please don't leave' is outta control... (b.t.w. i got it off the okay player site). thought is sick, and in the mist of all the booty-booty-booty rocking everywhere, this album will be a treat no doubt. p.s. in the mist of everyone's comments on previous roots classics nobody mentioned 'do you want more', which is probably my favorite... whatever happened to malik b?

Posted by: spitshine at June 14, 2006 12:11 AM

Man.. I am probably echoing those that are sayin The Roots should keep their same "Do you Want More" style.. Come on people!!! Can you say...

OUTKAST!!!!

Posted by: klaw at June 16, 2006 4:06 PM

Remember, The Roots are one of kind. Yeah, they did some exploring but it was nothing wack about it. When listening don't forget about Kamal spicin' things up with the keys and Hubb's funky bass lines. I think the next album will put them on legendary status.

Posted by: Hassan at June 22, 2006 3:04 AM

i'd have to say that phrenology is a pretty amazing album. it's experimental hip hop. it's clever, smart, political, funky, and fresh. but, the tipping point really disappointed me. i feel the lyrics, cool. but the album was a little too mainstream for me, and REALLY short! i was like...where are the rest of the tracks? it felt unfinished. yeah, it was different...and i appreciated that, but it left me thirsty for this next album. i'm really excited for what they'll come up with next. i will always support the roots. they deserve my money, and there are few artists i would ever say that about.

Posted by: jade at June 26, 2006 1:36 PM

In my opinion Phrenology was The Roots worst album and I actually liked Tipping Point. Organix is great as well as Do You Want More?!!!??! but in my opinion their best tracks came from Illadelph. But to be honest I have found that The Roots don't have a best album but they have good stand out tracks across the timeline. I am in their corner and I look forward to the new album. You would be hard pressed to find a rapper out today as good as the might Black Thought.

Posted by: Dan at June 29, 2006 7:23 AM

Don't complain about the Roots. The music is transcending and ever evolving.. If you don't like it, that's not their problem, they probably like it if they put it out there for your ears. Music is self expression and your not worried about pleasing people who want to hear the same thing over and over. If you like Organix and Do you want more? then listen to those albums don't worry about what's on the newer ish. If you want to hear the Roots ill shit see them live when they carry their songs out and change shit up. PEACE

Even tho I'm buyin the CD when I comes out, I got my hands on Game Theory tonight. So far, I've put the disc through the ringer 9 times straight, and I'll tell you straight up this is the absolute best Roots album since Things Fall Apart, probably even Iladelph. The thing about this album is that it isn't a return to form, but rather they use all that crazy shit they put in Phrenology and Tipping Point and make it straight up HOT. There aren't those fucked up interludes like !!!!! or whatever, it's just straight up inspired music. Malik B holds this shit down, ?uestlove is king, everything about this album is spades without a doubt. The Roots have returned to their hip hop throne, and just so ya'll don't think I'm bullshittin you, why don't you give the title track a listen and YOU tell ME what's hot.

i think this album will be a milestone for the band. i thought all the albums, with the exception of tipping point hit really hard in different ways. when i heard tipping point, i don't think it was different enough. the music sounded like it could have been produced rather than played by a band. no one stepped up for real on the album. the song on their myspace is ok, but it sounds like whats gonna be their single so you can't get a feel for the album. i have high hopes.

Posted by: basslayer at July 17, 2006 11:00 AM

Every album that the roots have put out has been at least good thats why they are one of the best hip hop groups ever. The Tipping point is one of their best albums with no bad tracks on it.Things fall apart just takes it as their best album.Organix is probably their worst album evehn though I like it,Do you want more? is their best of their earlier style and Illadelph is more "hardcore".Phrenology was good too with songs like sacrafice, the seed and rock you.I just hope game theory isnt too commercial sounding.

Posted by: David_b at July 17, 2006 1:08 PM

I've heard the new Roots album. It's hype man...

Posted by: je at July 17, 2006 2:36 PM

what are you all jabbing about? The Roots can do whatever it is they want, and thats keeping it real. They aren't here to please every listener or fan, or to come out withthe same dope stuff they came out with perviosuly, just with a differnet beat. They can stray as far wide and low as they want, because they are growing as a group, and fertilizing the future of good music. Please, don't insult or think you can criticize a group that has always been focuse don making great music, not mainstream hits. If anything, we should all be more honest with ourselves.

Man, I just heard Game Theory (yes, I am buying the CD & Vinyl when it comes out). It is the hardest, most incredible Roots album yet. Unbelievable...Black Thought is brilliant, but Malik B and others take some of the pressure off of him to spectacular effect. Check out the track "In The Music" when you get your hands on this...damn!

Posted by: J at July 19, 2006 7:41 PM

I didn't think the tipping point was their best album but for what was going on in music at the time it was perfect because it separated itself from the standard radio play at the time, especially in a generation that can care less about skills.

Posted by: vodka at July 31, 2006 7:09 PM

The new roots album is their best since illadelph...i got it advance. fire from beginning to end. back to the hip hop. sounds good in a system too this round.
dont sleep. and they got Malik B and Dice Raw back in the band...
now this is what im talkin about.
a week now, and its still gettin heavy bang.

by far the best thing goin in hiphop

Posted by: YAMOMS at August 2, 2006 12:01 AM

all i gotta say is the roots are the shit! ?uestlove is the shit, the return of Malik B is sick, Game Theory will be their best cd since things fall apart.

Posted by: ?uestlove is the shit at August 4, 2006 2:26 AM

the roots are raps equivalent of Pink Floyd and constantly push the envelope without trying to sound to artsy. I agree that illadelph is their best album in my opinion but I think sum folks got the tipping point twisted. It was intended to showcase Black Thought and not overshadow him like I think Phrenology did. Game Theory is brilliant and if I wasnt so poor i'd buy it from fye or sumthin

Posted by: jacki blu at August 10, 2006 12:18 PM

i already own The New Roots CD =)

Posted by: Dillon at August 21, 2006 6:55 PM

GAME THEORY IS BRILLIANT. THE ROOTS ARE THE MOST INNOVATIVE GROUP WITHIN THEIR GENRE OF MUSIC. EVERY ALBUM FROM "DO YOU WANT MORE" TO THE "TIPPING POINT" HAVE PROGRESSIVELY GOTTEN BETTER. THE ROOTS, IN MY OPINION, ARE THE GREATEST HIP HOP GROUP PUTTING OUT MUSIC THUS FAR. THERE INNOVATIVE SOUND GREATELY SUPERSEDES THE SH*T COMMING OUT OF THE MAIN STREAM TODAY.

Posted by: ROB at August 24, 2006 11:21 AM

JUST BOUGHT THE CD THIS DAY, AND AFTER 3 LISTENS I CAN SAY IT'S ARGUABLY THEIR MOST COHESIVE PIECE OF WORK TO DATE. HIGHLIGHTS TO ME ARE "IN THE MUSIC" AND THE TITLE TRACK. IN FACT IT INFUSES ALL THE WEIRDEST SOUNDCRAFTIN' OF THE TWO PREVIOUS ALBUMS AND MELTS IT WITH MORE "CLASSICAL" (BY THEIR STANDARDS) STRUCTURES. BUT THEY HAVE NEVER SOUNDED THAT DARK, DARE I SAY MENACING, EVER !!!

Posted by: DIO at August 25, 2006 5:42 PM

serious, this album is fuckin serious. even though i don't think it's quite illadelph level, i can't say it outloud, cuz its just so fuckin good. take it there's second verse is probably one of Black Thoughts illest ever. most importantly, this is a complete ALBUM. not just good tracks, not just ill verses (the roots always got those), but a complete, well thought out album that you can bump all day on repeat and never get sick of. get this album, legal or otherwise, but u need to get it.

I can't believe all these people talking about how Phenology wasn't good. Quit askin for the Roots of the early 90's! Its 2006!!! The music has to evolve. Every one of their albums is so different that they stand out among the world of crap that plays now. I've owned every Roots album since Organix and personally I can't really pick a favorite.

Posted by: antoine at October 12, 2006 7:41 PM

'do u want more' is their best album. end of
