Quadriplegic Hilary Lister First to Sail Around Britain (With Straws!)

A true hero in Britain, quadriplegic Hilary Lister has successfully sailed around her homeland solo, the first quadriplegic to do so.

Hilary Lister pulled off the feat thanks to an ingeniuous navigational system on her boat, that let her control the sails through a series of straws that she blew into. Hilary, an Oxford graduate, suffers from reflex sympathetic dystrophy, which keeps her in constand pain in addition to making her quadriplegic.

Absolutely an inspiring story for anyone who doubts they can oversome their obstacles, and the coolest thing to come out of sailing since the Christopher Cross song about it. Bravo to Britain's Hilary Lister!

The first female quadriplegic to sail solo around Britain, using a system straws to guide the boat, arrived back at Dover harbour yesterday. As the sun set, Hilary Lister, 37, sailed into the harbour to be greeted by cheering supporters...

How many days did it take her and how did she go to the bathroom by herself? It would suck being paralyzed.

You are a fantastic woman.
As much as I say to myself, you have nothing to complain about, I still do. Is it human nature to do that? I have my health, family, a home and friends, a good job and food on the table. I think everyone knows this to be true, but we all do it. Best of luck to you.

not being mean or anything, but what if the boat flipped? No way she could get up on that centerboard. was there a ship with her?

Every so often I am reminded as to how wonderful life should be. Hilary is an inspiration and an example of how fortunate people can be when they take what life has given them and find their adventure. We would all do well to get off our butts and find the adventurous quality in our lives. As a person with a normally functioning body I have become too complacent. I am going to take the day off and go sailing!

Posted by: Madison at September 3, 2009 11:50 AM

To thatguywho:

Are you serious? You don't see anything special about it! Just the fact that she's in a boat out in the water when she can't move anything but her head is amazing. If the boat tips over there is nothing she can do to help herself. I want you to have someone tie you up so that the only thing you can move is your head and put you out in a boat in the ocean and see how easy you think it is! Then have them tip the boat over. In fact, have someone tie you up and just leave you in your house for a few hours to see how she has to live. Try it before you make such a stupid statement.

This is a great story. I have a 15 foot day sailor that I take out in the Chesapeake Bay and it's a real challenge with two fully capable people. You have adjust your weight and sails very quickly, especially when you have a center board opposed to a heavy keel.

I'm so happy that Hillary can participate in her passion of sailing. I get the same feeling and would do the same thing if I were in her situation.

I do happen to have a friend that is in the same situation as you but he can't even talk. he has to use a stick to type on a computer to communicate. But he does not let that get him down. All you have to do is give 10% of your income, countless hours and a significant part of your logic and then you get the big theme-park-in-the-sky pay off.

Wow
How many people helped to get this thing done.
It is great that she did it, But She didn't do it be herself. No one talks about the preperation done by other people. Sad about her condition. Life is not always fair. You just have to live with life.

wonderful! What you have done is probably one of the bravest and most miraculous things i have ever heard of....and for the person that blamed god for her paralysis, yes god gave it to her, but now look at where she is now. She may have never been so motivated to do such an astounding and inspirational thing. Handicaps can sometimes be blessings as they bring out character like no other.

She didn't sail by herself...she had a crew of at least 10 to do all the work for the trip.. she just happen to be a person on the boat at the time the trip happen. What a bunch of BULLSHIT!!

Thank you for sharing your incrediable journey! I feel so appreciative of your spirit and love. This is incrediable and I am so proud of you! God Bless!

jimmie..you must have had a very abusive childhood and now with the internet find a way to lash out and bully without any fear of retrobution. But beware little jimmie...what goes around, comes around and it DOES!! Real bad karma you have there, kid. Bet you don't run your mouth like that out in public. If you are that type of person then you must be constantly getting your a_ _ kicked serverely for being so heartless, cruel and just plain ignorant. If this has not happened to you, consider yourself to be very fortunate. However, you are just setting yourself up for a huge downfall. Someday I hope you can find the right path and put aside all you misery and find peace. I truly do. You can be a better human being than you are being now. It just take strength courage faith and learning to love yourself. Are you up for that? You know better than anyone if you are.

My God, You are an inspiration! I work with the disabled whiners of this world and they have no idea how good they have it. If they lived in your world, 99% of them would die the 1st week.

Congratulations Hilary!

I am married to a wonderful adventurous man who happens to be blind. He had a sailboat with his brother when he is younger & now, we have a sailboat & enjoy sailing as a family. It is great to hear of your passion to empower others.

Godspeed & God Bless!

I am extremely happy for her. You know it is an inspiration what she did. Just unfortunate that not everyone can meet their dreams because of finance, I should know I am disabled too. Yet to share the experience with someone who did this is like they did it for all of us. I know that my spirit keeps on shining and even more with inspirations like her. Go Girl!

Amazing - your courage and open-hearted spirit are an example for us all! Happy sailing!

A) the scumbags on here who talk about raping must be SUCH ladies men....losers
B) Sailing solo is in reference to the fact that she navigated the boat herself.
C) For someone who is a quad, "blowing into straws" takes a lot of body power. It can get exhausting, I'm sure. For ex: Have you tried continuosly blowing up ballons for DAYS, or even hours, on end?
D)Using the word HANDICAP, in the year 2009??? Really??? Handicap should be a word only used on golf courts or dog races. Call her by her name or don't refer to her at all. People are people FIRST no matter what.
E) NO one is "afflicted" by a disability. It is a part of someone's existence, but it does not necessarily dictate who they are. In seeing this story, that should be the number one lesson learned. She didn't let it keep her from doing something she wanted to do.
F)Ken...what she did is something most people in her place may not think is possible. Do you do everything on your own? Commending her, only to talk about how "sad" her condition is, is the problem . Why not just focus on her accomplishment without mentioning how "sad" she is?? When you accomplish something that you didn't deem possible, do you feel sad?? Do you want to be reminded of how unlikely it was that you'd achieve it or would you rather people focus on the good you've done? People's opinions of PWD would change if they thought things through more before they speak. Perpetuating ignorance is such a sad epidemic.

Hi Hilary,

The day is coming to a close and I find this article. Watching and listening to the video, deeply move my heart to the depth of who you are. I thank GOD for the spirit that you have! Keep sailing and sharing your spirit! You are a power inspiration!

God bless her and the people whom help her striving to achieve her dreams .

The punks here though whom made the irrational comments and think that they are amusing or even if they are dead serious . You can look forward to never needing a blanket becuase rest assured you will be kept warm when you die and go to hell .

As mentioned above by quite a few you would dare not utter such sickening and unimaginable things in public you cowards . Hide behind the text and print and wish you were half the person she is .May all of you who make fun of paraplegics reap what you sew and i wouldn't mind standing over you watching ants eat your sorry asses alive and you in that position being the quadrapelegic. I may even take the time to piss in your mouth when you tried to scream in the agony you would be experiencing as they made they way around your chickenshit faces. It's a shame your mothers didn't love you .

Have a nice day and again hats off to Hilary , good job and keep sailing and chasing your dreams.

All it is, is media fodder!

Posted by: Anonymous at September 4, 2009 12:40 AM

what if the reason she is quadriplegic is because she was talking crap about another person and karma came back to get her?
I dont think the comments are irrational. if she is adventurous enough to sail around solo, then why is it a leap to assume that she wouldnt get a kick out of a good ol fashioned rape?

Posted by: raul olvera at September 4, 2009 12:55 AM

Nothing again'st Hilary. She did what she wanted to do ,Great Job .But like I said media fodder.

Posted by: Anonymous at September 4, 2009 1:00 AM

I think you are really brave for what you did.. and more than anything, thank you for reminding us, that anything is possible.

Posted by: shivni at September 4, 2009 3:20 AM

Media fodder maybe...but Hilary's a real human being living her life with gusto. good for you Hilary! Life's a blast quadriplegic or not but only if you make it that way! And she is...
