Waiter Jon-Barrett Ingels: Fired For Tweeting!

A waiter in Hollywood, Jon-Barrett Ingels, says he got fired this week for tweeting about an actress he served!

The actress, Hung co-star Jane Adams, ducked out on her bill and had her agent pay it up two days later, but with no tip. Adams heard about his tweet and a month later came back to give him a nice tip, but then, two weeks after that, she called the restaurant and got him fired! (according to Ingels)

Tough break for the guy, although I didn't like this quote from him:

"I'm a struggling actor too, and I felt like in that moment she lost the sense that I'm trying to do the same thing that's she's doing," Ingels told Slashfood. "I just became the guy that brought her soup."

So in other words, he thinks a waiter who's really an actor deserves respect, but a waiter who's just a waiter doesn't? Sounds like some lame Hollywood elitism to me, and makes his judgmental posts about celebs taste kinda funny.

Still though, if his claim is true that Jane Adams called and got him fired over that tweet (which nobody even saw since he only had about 25 followers at the time), she clearly went way overboard IMO, and needs to get over herself as well. Hollywood is just a bad scene all around, judging by recent news.

A struggling actor is all a-Twitter claiming his celebrity-sighting Tweets cost him his job. Jon-Barrett Ingels, 31, says he worked at Barney Greengrass, and was fired for tweeting about a visit from Hung star Jane Adams...

WOW Jane Adams should be called Jane BITCHIMS

Posted by: Anonymous at October 6, 2009 7:29 PM

Oh my God...what a bitch! I thought we had freedom of speech in this country. The waiter was lying, he was expressing his discontent about something that someone did. He should get his job back!

Posted by: Anonymous at October 6, 2009 7:30 PM

Good thing the jerk was fired. The bill was paid. She owed him nothing more. He was lucky that he had a job that gave him a set wage. Now he can be an entrepenuer and panhandle. Nobody is entitled to a "tip" and begging already paying customers for more money is degrading. What a loser.

Posted by: Anon at October 6, 2009 7:39 PM

If you call a server's wage "fixed", obviously you live in a bubble.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 6, 2009 7:51 PM

its common courtesy to tip. dont be such a stingy person. If you got the money, dont be such a negative person. cook your own food then.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 6, 2009 7:51 PM

Hey Anon, obviously you are ignorant of the table waiting business. Most waiters are paid below minimum wage with the anticipation that tips will make up the difference. It's also incentive for the waiting staff to give good service. In some restaurants, the lost revenue from a patron who skipped out on his bill is made up by the waiter who allowed it to happen in the first place. Although I'm glad the bill was paid, I really think that both parties have gone overboard with the whole matter

Posted by: Anon_get_real at October 6, 2009 7:54 PM

Ok, for the freaking idiot that says the waiter was "owed nothing more", maybe you should get a job in a restaurant and make $2.13/hour and rely on tips to pay your mortgage and braces for you kids. Maybe you should see what it is like to be responsible for idiots that don't know how to handle their liquor and it becomes your job to also be a babysitter for $2.13/hour. Maybe you should have to pay for jerkoff customers who walk out on their tabs with your $2.13/hour. Wait, don't forget that you won't have the jerkoffs tip to help cover the tab. If you don't like to tip and don't think that anyone is entitled to a tip then maybe you should keep your cheap sorry a#@ at home and let the people who actually WORK FOR A LIVING keep up the good work.

Not tiping is stealing. The waiter provided a service and was not paid for it

Posted by: mike at October 6, 2009 8:05 PM

I don't know why I'm bothering, but some comments just make me crazy. We do not have absolute freedom of speech in this country relative to private workplaces. The GOVERNMENT cannot control your speech, but your employer can when you are on the clock. And when you are on the clock everything you do and say as a representative of your employer is a product of your work including your stupid Tweeting. So, CUT IT OUT.
And TIP and OWED don't belong in the same sentence.

Posted by: Greg at October 6, 2009 8:14 PM

how assuming of her to think she shouldn't have to pay for something, and let the little people wait on her for $2.13 an hour...also to the dumbest comment i have come across in the longest time . you should always be nice to the person who handles your food & drink. they don't quickly forget a face, besides its just the decent thing to do , have a lil class, by the way i will never watch anything w/that cheap woman again .

Posted by: suzie at October 6, 2009 8:17 PM

Ok so the waiter/waitress gives you lousy service your still supposed to tip them?

Posted by: MW at October 6, 2009 8:24 PM

Actually, California is one of the few states that does not allow tip credits when determining minimum wages - so a tipped employee is entitled to the same minimum wage as a non-tipped employee...anything above that is extra.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 6, 2009 8:28 PM

I think it blows what she did I for one will not watch anything shes in ever again Go Wendy your comment was well said

Posted by: marcie at October 6, 2009 8:28 PM

Suzie is right on, I am certain that a series named HUNG is one more sleazy, poorly written sex fest. Why should we expect anyone associated with such trash to behave any other way? And if you feel you dont need to leave a gratuity to someone who worked FOR YOU while you were at the resturant than stay home and cook for yourself, then go to work the next day for half pay! I bet you wont do that, will you? but you expect others to serve you for free?? Your simply a selfish jerk!

Posted by: mark shells at October 6, 2009 8:35 PM

Suzie,

It is always a common courtesy to tip, even when the waiter/waitress has provided lousy service. The standard tip rate is 15-17% of your bill. If lousy service is given, then don't give them the full 15-17%, instead, give them say 8-10%. The wait staff will then get the hint that they provided less then satisfactory service and usually make improvements for the next customers. But yes, always tip, always. They make very little for hourly wage and are lucky to have any benefits. Put yourself in their shoes for a moment. Maybe that person had a recent tragic event happen in their life. Could you provide great service if this were the case?

Posted by: Jack at October 6, 2009 8:36 PM

Who is Jane Adams anyway?

Posted by: jon at October 6, 2009 8:36 PM

To those who tried to explain the pay system, you've left one more thing out. Waiters are taxed by the Govt' according to a percentage of their sales. If a waiter isn't tipped he or she is still taxed on the amount that the Fed's believe you made on the tab. More reason to remember your waiter when you've finished your meal.

Posted by: Redriver at October 6, 2009 8:40 PM

My sister works at ihop and I always tip because i know they make close to nothing, especially a slow day so tipping is good

Posted by: shera at October 6, 2009 8:40 PM

If I were Jane Adams, I wouldn't want to eat out at any restaurant again, because the service staff will start doing all kinds of nasty things with her food, and deservedly so. What a bitch.

Posted by: rk at October 6, 2009 8:43 PM

Posted by: Benny at October 6, 2009 8:46 PM

What has happen to people when have we forgot to treat others as you yourself want to be treated..put yourself in his shoes, how would you have handled it?? think about that and hope you get decent service next time your out and about...if everyone took pride in their work and respected themselves as they should others maybe this wouldn't have happened??

Posted by: Jojo Dancer at October 6, 2009 8:49 PM

I think that waiters are in their job because they want to be. I do not receive tips at my job, yet I do not complain about it. If you do not like $2.13, maybe you should find another job; quit spending so much that you cannot affort it; or earn your tip.

Posted by: 7 at October 6, 2009 9:20 PM

@mark shells: Not defending anyone here, but the show Hung isn't a porno. It's a little tacky for you to stereotype entertainment that you know nothing about when assailing someone else.

@go_f_urslf: Alot of waiters have their jobs because they can't manage to find other work. Alot of people who work such jobs a)lack the educational credentials to find better work or b)have nothing else to look forward to at the moment, and simply need something to support themselves until their dream kicks in. Don't assume people work shitty jobs because they want to, that's arrogant and asshole-ish.

@everyone else: Yeah, what Jane Adams did is pretty much in bad taste, but this guy seems somewhat arrogant. It's nice and all to tip, and I understand most waiters have trouble making good money, but it's not required, and if the service and such was bad, I don't think you should be required to tip for fear of the entire world turning on you. Just my opinion.

Stop whining! You knew what the wages were going into that job. I'm on ss, receiving $700 a month with mortgage, taxes, utilities and medical expenses. Dining out is an occasional luxury. I need dental work and eyeglasses too. Shall I bring a tin cup to the restaurant to grovel for assistance too? You're lucky you get the 15% you do from me. Grow up and realize you're blessed to have a job with some generous tippers. Life isn't perfect--adjust!

Posted by: myristica at October 6, 2009 9:33 PM

I don't believe he should not have been fired due to a second party phone call. The actor should of had the police or manager of the resturant called on them. The manager should of handled it, if they were as good as the waiter. Then police should of been called for basic theft, they certainly wanted publicity. I don't agree with the actors choice and being a former waitress who had the same thing done to me. They Stole and should be known for the thief they are.

Posted by: donna at October 6, 2009 9:37 PM

she shouldn't be excused from paying a bill unless she worked it out with the manager/owner before hand. if so, the employee should have been told in advance. Now he's wrong to expect "special" treatment simply because he's an ACTOR too. How about leave a tip because its the right thing to do, if the service was lousy, then say so, complain. If she did get the guy fired, i agree with the other comments, she's a bitch and I too will ban anything she's in. If she had nothing to do with it, she should issue a statement clearing it up. Wake up people, our rights are slowly being taken away from us!

Servers where I work have to tip out the hostess, bartender, and a food runner based on our sales, if someone doesn't tip me, it costs me money to wait on them. We are also taxed on our sales. So if you have a $50.00 check and don't tip, it cost me around 4 or 5 bucks to wait on you(out of the less than minimum wage). I wait tables for a living because I can work the schedule I need to be with my family. So I try to give great service everyday, some people are just plain mean or really cheap. If you don't want to tip, go to McDonalds! Be kind to servers as we are the last people to handle your food before you get it!

Posted by: pinky at October 6, 2009 10:03 PM

how do you guys even know if the wait person is telling the truth exspecially if they only have 25 followers. Whats the chance the actress even saw this persons tweet...... sounds fishy to me but you imbeciles will apparently believe anything

Posted by: guest at October 6, 2009 10:06 PM

WOW

Posted by: C at October 6, 2009 10:12 PM

OK,first no matter how much a waiter makes hourly, if they provide poor service then you are entitled to dock their tip. Also, ask a waiter if they will trade the excessive tips they get in order to get everyone to tip the same. They would say no. Finally, IF YOU CANNOT DEAL WITH THESE THINGS THEN YOU SHOULD NOT BE A WAITER.

Posted by: Horn H8er at October 6, 2009 10:16 PM

WHO is Jane Adams??? Never heard of her. I always tip. The waiter is only trying to make a living. maybe she should see what it is like to be on the other end of the stick.

Posted by: gary at October 6, 2009 10:20 PM

I do not know who this woman is, and I could care less, but I will certainly NOT ever watch any shows she is in. What upsets me the most is that if it was any of us who did not pay the bill, yes, the police would have been called, and we would have a court date set. The waiter should have never been fired, but I guess the owner didn't want to lose that cheap ass customer, what the owner is probably going to realize soon is that by doing what he did he is going to lose a lot of bussines. Does anyone know what restaurant it was? I agree with wendy...

Posted by: jalapeno at October 6, 2009 10:21 PM

I think what Jane did is very shi*ty. I would never skip out on a bill, however I have eaten without leaving a tip. I understand that waiters make next to nothing and live basically on their tips however, a tip is OPTIONAL in my view, (or else they would add a set amount to your bill like they do for large parties). I am very happy to and always do tip for great service, even mediocre service I will leave at least 15%. However, I once received absolutely shi**y service so I left nothing. Let that be a lesson to the server, if you want a tip, you'd better at least give minimal service. I understand everyone has a bad day, but if you work in ANY type of a service industry, you'd better learn to put on a plastic face, and fake a smile so you can get that tip. And sorry but that server obviously wasn't too smart. In this day and age, nothing is private on the internet. He should have created a twitter name that his boss would've never found. Dont share your personal e-mail addresses with your boss if you dont want him to find your twitter, facebook and etc. accounts. Duh!

Posted by: Anonymous at October 6, 2009 10:37 PM

Waitresses don't make crap-just a little over 2 bucks an hour. Out of tips, they have to 'share' with the cooks, busboys, hostesses, bartenders, etc...get the picture? This is based on sales percentages, so not leaving a tip puts the waitress in the hole. When a known good tipper comes in, one of the managers usually 'demotes' herself long enough to make an extra 30 bucks or so. & God forbid a waitress actually have a good night. The managers get so jealous they can't see straight. If a waitress has too many good nights, she can kiss her job good by. That's why you see so many ugly, nasty, lazy waitresses-they don't intimidate the managers. Oh yeah, waitresses pay taxes based on sales-not actual wages. Do you still think these people are greedy?

Posted by: cheryl at October 6, 2009 10:40 PM

If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out! I hated when cheap a$$ customers would come to eat in my section, and as they were leaving, tell me what a great waiter I was, and then apologize they could only leave $5 on an $80 bill because times were tough! If times were really that tough, stay home! Or if you have to eat out, go to McDonalds! Standard tip rate nowadays is actually 20% of the bill. If you get poor service, SAY SOMETHING! But you should still tip 10-15%, unless the server insults you or craps on your table. In that case, no tip is required! Also consider that if your food is late, or not prepared to your liking, it is usually not the server's fault, but the kitchen or expeditor's error.

Posted by: AJ at October 6, 2009 10:45 PM

Gee...you know what happens to people like ME when I skip on the bill? I GET ARRESTED! So, it's supposed to be ok that she skipped and he got fired because he called her out? So what if her AGENT paid 2 wks later. SHE SKIPPED.

She needs to get arrested for theft, and he needs a job...somewhere else.

It's this type of thinking that's sending our country and our next generation into the tank.

Pull your heads out.

Posted by: Ann at October 6, 2009 10:52 PM

AJ, quit your whining tipping is OPTIONAL. What about a dishwasher, they work harder than anyone else in a restaurant and the lowest paid. You complain about a couple of dollars that you are probably going to use to buy crack. Suck it up AJ, if you don't like it when you don't get tipped enough, perhaps you should find another job, obviously waiting tables isn't the job for you. Get an education and you will make even more money than the $8.00-$12.00 dollar tip on an $80.00 dollar bill.

Posted by: jalapeno at October 6, 2009 10:55 PM

When I go into a place to eat, I willingly accept a responsibility to pay the agreed upon sum fo rthe food that I order. I also willingly agree to TIP my server FOR GOOD SERVICE. Lousy service = lousy tip, or none.

I do not care if the server is having a bad day. I do not care if the server needs to buy a WII for his kid. I don't care if the server is a struggling actor. What I care about is my overall dining experience. If the dining experience was pleasurable, the TIP will reflect that. I am not cheap and have tiped upwards of 40% on a $100 bill. But I will not be browbeaten into submission by those that say I HAVE to tip ... and it HAS to be 15 to 20% or whatever.

Until it is posted or printed on the menu that a % will be added to the bill as a "service charge, then I consider the tip to be voluntary and as such, if the waiter wants a good tip, he/she better dang well give good service.

BTW ... I almost always overtip breakfast waitresses ... They work harder than any of the servers in the so-called fine dining establishments.

Posted by: Alcabiades at October 6, 2009 10:55 PM

For poor or bad service when I eat out, I will leave a penny, yes a penny. That shows the wait staff that I didn't forget to tip and just what I think of their service

Posted by: twoponies at October 6, 2009 10:58 PM

No question: wait staff deserve to be tipped. It's hard work, and they put up with a lot of grief from far too many rude customers. When you ask them to bring food/drink to you, there's an implied contract, just as there is when you sit at a shoe-shine stand and put your feet up on the thingies. Fact: women are much stingier tippers than men, and rich women are much worse than middle-class women.

That said, the waiter was DUMB to Twitter about it. Whine about it to his mother/wife/girlfriend/boyfriend, fine; sympathy is in their job descripion. But there is absolutely no legal expectation of privacy in the e-world. And words, like actions, have consequences.

I completely agree. When I go out to eat, I am not coming to the restaurant so that you can serve me. I am coming to eat. That being said, as a COURTESY, I will tip waitstaff for average/good/great service. If you dont give at least average service, expect a minimal IF ANY tip. I dont care about your day, because you knew what you signed up for when you became a waitperson. I am not OBLIGATED to GIVE a tip, or else it would be automatically added to my bill.

Posted by: Sympathetic but real at October 6, 2009 11:19 PM

First of all are you all forgetting the important thing here....... it was stated that she didn't pay her bill and that her agent came back 2 days later to pay it. If I ditched out of a restaurant without paying my bill I am most certain that they would call the police for theft. I'm 34 and in the service industry by choice. I have a bachelor's degreee in culinary arts and take my profession very seriously. For all of you who've posted comments like "be glad I left any tip at all" or "go find another job", shame on you!! Maybe your assumptions that all servers are underacheivers with a "tin cup" should be adjusted. A gratuity is part of the dining experience. Without it, service becomes non-existent or lackluster. (Been to Taco Bell recently?) Not leaving a gratuity is like renting a car and not replacing the gasoline in the tank. If you can't afford the gratuity, you can't afford the meal. Furthermore, if you admit that you eat out only on occasion, who the heck are you to judge what is competent service anyway?

2. No one, including me, ever got rich waiting tables.(but did have fun)
3. Its well known in table waiting....If ya don't like the service, leave a penny(yep, I'm showin my age)
4. Walking out on a tab shows considerably BAD TASTE, POOR/LACK of manners. Hopefuly her parents have passed on so to not have to carry her shame.

Did you not fully read the article or did you only read what suited you?

I don't know about restaurants in Cali but where I'm from, you don't skip out on a meal and pay two days later. You pay for the meal when that bill comes.

What would be YOUR frame of mind if you were serving someone and they left without leaving a tip let alone paying the entire bill? For all you know, that person will never come back and YOU will have to foot that person's bill. Yes, she (well, technically her agent) paid two days later. To Anon: "Good thing the jerk was fired. The bill was paid. She owed him nothing more."

I'm not sure about you, but I would not stand for that.

If the food industry is that horrible, why don't those people work in retail or sales? When you work in the food industry it is expected that your min wage is crap... that's what tips are for. There is no law that requires a patron to tip their server. I believe in some countries, it is actually rude to tip. The server is there for you - it is their job. Seriously, know your job description and the probable outcome of your job. If you only give 50% of your best, it will show. Patrons are observers and they know what good service looks like. Do they HAVE to tip their server? No. Don't like it? Re-evaluate your options. Get a different job. Simple as that.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 6, 2009 11:50 PM

I agree with Sjones. I have chosen this profession because, as a rule, I enjoy the people that are my customers and the hours allow me to be with my kids when they are home. I work hard for my $2.13 an hour and if I provide good service, I look forward to being compensated for that hard work by additional tips. Nothing is more deflating to someone working in this industry than to provide good, dare I say it, great service and get stiffed or paid a 10% tip. Yes, I am aware that times are touch, but they are tough for servers too, so if you can afford to eat out, but not afford to tip your server, re-think your dining choices. McDonalds anyone?

Posted by: bets at October 6, 2009 11:57 PM

"Who gives a crap? maybe the lady forgot her purse and had to comeback later" - Do you really believe that? I mean, if I forgot my purse I think I'd be going home before ordering or sending someone to get it while I'm eating. I wouldn't come back two days later, either, with it.
"and if the waiter has nothing better to do than tweet about the customers that come to his restuarant then his but needs to be fired for not having a life." You make me laugh. Do you work full time, trying to pay your rent and your cell bill and possibly a car payment? Are you a 'struggling actor' in Cali? Well, my thought to that would be, if you ARE doing all that, then, technically you don't have a life to begin with. Why? Because you're too busy working, cold-calling potential agents and trying to get gigs to even HAVE a life!
"it's not his business to out celebs who don't tip, with that mind set he'll forever be a waiter" In this media-saturated world, where what Angelina Jolie has to drink at 2 PM at x restaurant is on the cover of every rag mag, it's everyone's business. Do you not have a bad day and not update your Facebook status about it or tweet about it?
"what a ding dong." I think you're the ding dong.

It's painfully obvious that those posters who are the most hostile towards Mr. Ingels have *never* worked in the service industry. I say, "Shut the feck up!" You don't have the first clue how hard (and sometimes degrading) the type of work those people put in during their shifts. Me? I tip 20% (ore more) if the service is good.

I hope the next waiter who deals with Ms. Adams spits in her food.

Posted by: anne at October 7, 2009 12:02 AM

I have been a waitress, so has my daughter. If you think a tip is "owed" as part of the service, you are very sadly mistaken. A TIP is for service beyond the ordinary job, not just for doing your job.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 7, 2009 12:04 AM

WOW!! ONLY.IN.AMERICA. Look at the people on here DEMANDING to be tipped. DEMANDING. First of all, for the people screaming wolf and threatening to boycott Hung and calling the actress a slut blah, blah, blah you have nothing to go on other than the story that is posted on here. Yet you make passionate comments as if you were present when this happened. That is, IF it actually happened and this guy isn't simply doing this for the attention/publicity. He did say he was a struggling actor afterall. You people swallow everything that is thrown at you hook, line and sinker without even applying the remotest of thought activity to it. That is why the Wall Street Journals and the New York Times and the Chicago Tribunes are going out of business while the National Enquirers and the People Magazines thrive! You don't like to think. AT ALL. You also have a sense of entitlement that is almost laughable to behold. Tips are discretionary. Waiting tables is not the hardest job on earth. Tips are NOT a part of your employment contract so stop acting like it is! And for the person who said "......stay at home if you can't afford to eat out..." guess what? They can. They paid their bill. The tip is NOT part of that bill. They don't owe you $hit!!!

Posted by: Chica at October 7, 2009 12:05 AM

God, you people are stupid. Some of you make sense but this whole conversation is a reflection of america right now. Below are my own opinions/points on this subject:

-Who says you have to tip in the first place??

-WHY DO I HAVE TO TIP FOR BAD SERVICE?

-Waiters/Servers and everybody already gets paid.....or at least should.....and staff knows how much money they were getting an hour. Tipping is unpredictable and they should have known this when they started working there!

-If I was a waitress, I wouldn't expect ANYTHING for a tip and I'd be very GRATEFUL for any tip at all.

-NOBODY deserves anything extra other than salary. Period. That's what they're there to do, to SERVE!!! Whoever made this rule up about tipping was trying to rip people off. And we all fell for it.

-Wake up people, you don't deserve crap. Get your paycheck and shut up, OR GET ANOTHER JOB.

-Most of you all idiots following a stupid tradition. Think for yourselves for once.

-By the way, when I get good service, I go out of my way not just to say thank you, but I tip the waitress/server generously. But I just do it out of tradition. I often ask myself "Don't they already get paid? Why do I have to give them extra money? out of courtesy? But they're already getting paid". Don't you ever ask yourselves that???

-I know some of you are going to say the stupid "they don't earn enough money, they have to pay their bills, blah blah", then they shouldn't be working THERE!!!!!! GET ANOTHER JOB!!!!!!

-Stop defending these servers it only makes the situation worse. People just settling for menial jobs. THEY KNOW THEY'RE MENIAL TOO. So why be surprised about no tip, low tip, etc. The worst thing about this is that some people get this job because they KNOW they will be getting tips and they RELY on these tips to survive. And when they don't get tips, they start crying "oh no, they didn't tip me, boo hoo". GREEDY.

-I'm going through hard times like everybody else and have bills stacked up too. When I do a service for someone, do I expect a tip everytime??? WE SHOULD BE TIPPING EVERYBODY THEN, RIGHT?

-WAITERS/WAITRESSES SHOULD JUST GET A RAISE AND NOT EXPECT A TIP. IT'S THEIR JOB TO OFFER GREAT SERVICE. IT SHOULDN'T BE COAXED OUT WITH A TIP. Maybe the complaining will stop once they get raises.

-Everybody just goes on without questioning crap in the world and expect different results from the same traditional bullshit. Too bad there's only a few of you who have a brain.

Posted by: Christy at October 7, 2009 12:07 AM

It was stupid of him to expect preferential treatment b/c he was a fellow actor, but the actress is still in the wrong for skipping out on the bill in the first place. Think of it this way- ALL he did was tweet about it. He could've sold that info to a tabloid, but didn't. What I think is horrible is that she went back & had him fired AFTER her agent had paid & she'd tipped him. The tweet was presumably done on the same day that she skipped out on the bill. I'm more disturbed that she isn't getting punished for the fact that she ran out on a bill. IE.- SHE STOLE FOOD. If her agent hadn't paid, then that's something she could've been arrested for. It's not a major crime, but it's still a crime.

I don't tip unless the service is *excellent* and I really do mean excellent, waaaaaay above average. I don't care how much money you make. I provide excellent service to customers and *never* get a tip. I work much harder than some servers ever do, still no tip.

ok Christy, since you seem to have all the answers. Just for you, let restaurants raise the cost of your meal 20% so the boo-hoo crybaby greedy server can get more than $2.13 an hour. If you don't enjoy the entire experience of eating out which includes be served, then keep your cheap a$$ at home! What a snotty attitude! What other "low level" jobs do you look your nose down at besides those working on the service industry?

Posted by: bets at October 7, 2009 12:19 AM

Posted by: BCN at October 7, 2009 12:22 AM

I'll keep it simple...
1. If you can't afford to tip, then go f***ing eat at McDonalds. Servers dont need ur sorry asses occupying their tables.
2. If you want to eat for free, go f***ing eat at home.
3. If you're rude and miserable, go f***ing kill yourself, but dont eat at our tables and then leave no tip, ESPECIALLY if you were just given great service.
By the way, servers KNOW when you've just received good or bad service. Last weekend, a lady wanted to pay child's price for an 18 year old daughter. When I refused, she bitched about it out loud, then talked to the manager, then did NOT leave a tip. The difference in price? $4

And for the people saying servers chose this pitiful job, well you'd be surprised to learn that most servers take pride in their work. We meet interesting people and can brighten people's days. Unfortunately, we sometimes have to serve cheap ass maothef***ers like you, but we still do it.

**It would be wonderful if servers could refuse service to certain customers: "No, i dont want to serve this cheap ass!" hehehehe!! my fantasy....

Posted by: Anonymous at October 7, 2009 12:32 AM

Fisrt of all T.I.P.S stands for "to insure proper service" I am a very generous tipper but if I get crappy service they aren't getting much. In this case I just think she is a loser/thief, and got caught, so decided to pay the bill and get the snich fired.

Posted by: shame on me at October 7, 2009 12:47 AM

A large part of me agrees with the majority of commentors, but allow me to add this. Having worked in the service industry for many years, I believe that we should hold the establishment responsible for not paying their employees. Most servers are doing more than just bringing your food, they are cleaning walls, scrubbing floors, vacuuming dining rooms. 2.13 an hour is a joke for this amount of labor that is "outside" of the direct customer experiance, and should be against the law. It sounds to me as if she's a cheapskate, but I must say, the guy is an elitist schmuck who has insulted Every self respecting service industry employee. Just because we wear a name badge does NOT mean we are less than you. Just because we wear a name badge does NOT mean that you can take out your crappy day on us. Some of us actually enjoy what we do. In my time, I've seen many idiots whom believe that they shouldn't have to pay for their meal because of this or that, much less leave a tip. In some cases they are justified, but most of the time they aren't. "The customer is always right" is a concept by a greedy ass schmuck who wanted more than what he was paying for. And that's my penny under glass for ya.

Hey professors, uncle sam assumes a waiter makes 15% on the gross of sales he or she makes for the buisness they work for. so for the retards that need an example, if you sell at the end of the day $1000.00 in f&B for your employer you need to report $150.00 to uncle sam. that means if you dont receive at least 15% tip from your guest on every check, you actually own the tax on the money uncle sam assumes you make. one day it will be manditory for all to leave a tip. isnt that nice.. so for all of you who dont tip for no good reason or make shit up so that you dont have to leave a tip. i hope you choke at your next meal.

All these wait staff people are quick to tell us how much they make an hour ($2.13) but none are saying how much they make with the tips. Lets look at some conservative (I think) numbers. If I am wrong, let me know. When they are busy and working hard they should be able to wait on 10 groups of customers. If their bill is $10 and they get the 20% they say they deserve that would be $20 each hour. So they don't make $2.13 they make $22.13 an hour. That's pretty good, no? If the tip is an "implied contract", part of the cost, etc., then lets outlaw tips and pay the wait staff $10 an hour or even $15. Then the restaurant can raise the price of the food 20%. I suspect that people would get out of the wait business cause they know they make more than that. The only time tipping is mandatory is when it is disclosed on the menu. This usually happens when there is a large group being served and the tip is shown as part of bill. What I hate is when it is put on the bill, but the waitress doesn't tell you. You then pay the tip, and also give the waitress an additional tip. She doesn't point out that it already a part of the bill and pockets the money. Now thats dishonest. And it happens all the time.

I do not know who she is, I have worked in the food business for years, and it is crazy that this lady who did not pay her bill "gets some one fired" I do not understand that at all, I will also not watch anything she does! she seems to forget who pays her "bill" for entertainment, perhaps she would not be so ready to impose herself on anothers unemployment if her bill was not paid, and we call her superiors and get her fired! Who are her manager' or producers or whoever?

I recommend that all the ignorant people who don't treat their wait staff, bartenders and flight attendants with respect and gratitude to rent the crude and disgusting comedy "Waiting". It is true, that you may get away with treating the server bad and leaving a crappy tip once....but I advise you to never come back to that establishment because believe me, when I tell you that you will be remembered, you most definitely will be. Just this week in a restaurant that I will not disclose, 3 patrons returned. The current server did not know them, but several others did know them and advised the current server to make sure they had the worst service ever...........beyond that I'll leave it up to your imagination. A "tweet" is the least of your problems if your a low life cheap ass that doesn't pay or tip. Best of luck to those of you who don't. :)

who cares if she's a tv actress..ANYONE WHO WALKS ON THIER TAB OR DOES NOT TIP IS JUST CHEAP...end of story
i have been in the restaurant business for 30 years..you people have NO idea what we do , how hard we work, how difficult the conditions are that we sometimes have to work in and how rudely alot of people treat servers, bartenders, bussers, etc...the only reason not to tip is if you have really horrible service..otherwise people we don't live in europe where the gratuity is included...you all know this...you know in this country servers make a fourth of the minimum wage & you know people cant live on regular minimum wage..so how can we if you don't tip us?
A T.I.P. BOX APPEARED IN THE FIRST RESTAURANTS WAY BACK WHEN...KNOW WHAT IT STANDS FOR?

TO INSURE PROMPTNESS..

SO IF YOU DON'T WANT TO TIP...TELL US UP FRONT...IT'S ONLY FAIR...THEN WE CAN GIVE YOU THE SERVICE EQUIVALENT TO OUR TIP...CRAPPY!!!!

T.I.P.S.- To Insure Proper Service.

I have over 30 years experience in managing, training, and working as a waiter/bartender from casual dining to 5-Star and cruiselines. Everybody has an off night but does that mean the customer needs to pay for it? No. A good server takes the good with the bad and minimizes the bad nights. The law of averages pays off.

Did the gentleman give her good service? Does that mean he is naturally entitled to a tip? No. I tend to over tip because of my work experience (Drives my wife nuts). I can tell when someone is having a genuine bad night and will still tip well and hopefully improve their night. But if I get rude service with someone who thinks they are going to get a tip because of their presence...they have a rude awakening coming. Only time I ever pay for rude service is when I go to a restaurant like "Dicks Last Resort" in San Antonio, the servers and staff are paid to give you bad service and its all part of the show.

Posted by: Manny at October 7, 2009 1:16 AM

In most states minimum wage is $7-plus and hour, but $2.13 when working as a tipped employee. Yes they are paid $2.13 an hour, but that barely pays the taxes on the paycheck, sometimes it doesn't. Servers are working for the opportunity to earn a tip by providing you a service. What a server takes home in cash after the shift is what they make, there is not a weekly paycheck.

I can't wait for the arrogant remarks of how they should find a different job. No, you should keep your cheap a$$ at home. If you wanted to be served when dining out, be prepared to tip. If you just want to not prepare your food then go pick up Arby's or McDonald's where there are not employees catering to you as you dine.

Posted by: Real at October 7, 2009 1:29 AM

I disagree with the "person" whom said,"the poor waiter didn't deserve tip." I love to go out and eat in a nice restaurant and tip my waiter base on the service they provide to me. The national rate is 17 percent. If they do a good job serve me. I tip them anywhere from 20 to 30 Percent.

Posted by: chicken-coop at October 7, 2009 1:30 AM

There are very few restaurants left who allow servers to take double tips. (IE - the tip is included and the guest doesn't bother to read their receipt and leaves an additional gratuity). Generally they allow the server to take the gratuity that the guest wrote in and remove the automatic gratuity.

Tipping is implied in any restaurant with servers. That being said, the % of the tip can and should be adjusted up or down depending on the level of service provided.
To say that servers should be grateful for 'any' tip as if they were begging you to be paid for providing a service is asinine and tacky. In the countries where tipping is not done you do get somewhat worse service. Why? Because the tip is included in the bill, which is you are already paying roughly 20-30% more for your food. The server is paid a flat rate and is much less likely to cater to your every whim.

Servers aren't begging, they are providing a service and deserve to be paid for that service. Period. The fact that you can choose exactly how much you leave them does not mean that it is acceptable to leave nothing at all, barring extraordinary circumstances.

Most servers don't make a great deal of money. Some DO make a lot of money, depending on their level of skill and where they are working. Either way, if you can't afford to pay a server then simply elect to go to one of the many restaurants that does not have servers waiting on you. Otherwise, realize that you are entering into an implied social contract by enjoying the service provided to you, and tip accordingly.

It may be customary, but it is not MANDATORY! I don't owe you $hit except the price of my meal! I'm sorry that you only make $2.13 an hour but that's not my problem. Maybe YOUR stupid ass needs to work at McDonald's, at least they pay minimum wage, so you won't complain about only making $2 bucks an hour. I will eat where I feel like eating and WILL NOT be badgered into leaving you a tip if your service sucks. By the way, if patrons weren't sitting in your station you wouldn't have anyone to wait on and therefore wouldnt have a job so chew on that you idiots!

Ahhh Jane-
you give actors a bad name. Nothing new.

Mind you, the waiter, though right, also comes off immaturely; like Kanye Asshole.

May you both become Reality TV "stars."
----oh, you already are.

Zip it, both of you tweets/twits.

Posted by: stan at October 7, 2009 1:47 AM

THE WAITER SHOULD HAVE MADE ANY OF THIS PERSONAL , I BELIEVE THERE IS MORE TO THIS STORY , OTHER THAN THE ACTRESS INVOLVED . I THINK THIS PERSON/ WAITER NEEDS TO GO TO GROVELING ANONOMOUS, AND READ HOW TO BE A HAPPY DOOR MAT IN A BAD ECONOMY. GET OVER IT DUDE !... SHE PROBS HAD A MILLION THINGS TO DO BEFORE THE BIG 5:00PM , AND FORGOT 2 PAY YOUR SORRY WHINING BITCH BLOGGING ASS. Quit crying and bitching on the tweet sheet, and start thinking about winning and finding a job whrere you don't serve the public. YOU ARE WAY 2 SOFT 4 THE SERVICE SECTOR !!!

Posted by: androclies at October 7, 2009 1:51 AM

Hmmm, if she was famous I think that we all would know her. If she was one of those low budget film actors, it's no wonder she did what she did. Have you people ever thought that maybe she did it to get her 15min. of fame in?

Posted by: October at October 7, 2009 1:53 AM

wow i ams urprised at the comments, First I have 2 college degrees and have tried for years to get a decent job, most of the time , I am over qaulified! 2nd
we should be paid regular min wage, because Americans are cheap and do not know better, even if you have tip credit as an employer you still need to follow the rules and they dont! they charge you if people do not pay the bills, if you break something, etc so pay your bills and tip because our employers are not always fair and do not pay us correctly or supply benefits!!!!!!! thank you

Posted by: Tia Bruhn at October 7, 2009 2:00 AM

Having a BA in hospitality I know how important tips are but stop the crying, I'm sure if it were just some normal joe you would have forgotten about it. As for your firing I highly doubt it was her that was the cause seeing as she ran out on the bill for a few days. Management and owners dont like that, it was prob his whinning about it that got him fired. It all comes with the industry and if it bothers servers that much then they need to look elswhere. Remember the times when you get those 100% tips...

Posted by: David at October 7, 2009 2:03 AM

The witch should have been arrested for defrauding an innkeeper. It would have happened to you or I if we skipped out on a bill!

Posted by: shempbat at October 7, 2009 2:07 AM

I think that place should hire him back.. at least he's honest.. she should be ashamed of herself for everything, especially for getting him fire... shame shame on HER.... If I had a resaurant I'd hire him... cs

Posted by: Anonymous at October 7, 2009 2:09 AM

Can any of this story be verified? At absolute least this happened 1 month and 2 days ago. Assuming this story is true: 1. She should have been arrested for theft. 2. Was service unsatisfactory? Can that even be verified? The waiter will say it was but the actress will say no to save face. 3. How did she find out about the tweet? 4. Why was he fired? He says because of a tweet (possible) but, was he fired for some other reason repeatedly late to work, poor service, etc. 5. Has the waiter or the actress been asked for a comment? This news story leaves alot to be answered.

@Real

To quote you, you said "Servers are working for the opportunity to earn a tip" Two words stand out here- "opportunity" and "earn". In no way does that IMPLY that I OWE you a tip. I am not cheap because I dont tip you. You obviously have not "earned" it, therefore you don't "deserve" it and you are not gonna "get" it. YOU need to go work at McDonalds, you'd get more than $2 an hour and then you can shut the hell up! As a server, you are SUPPOSED to serve me, it is your job. I am not SUPPOSED to tip you, you have the "opportunity to earn" a tip if your service was good.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 7, 2009 2:24 AM

I didn't read them all but I read quite a few. I have never gone anywhere there was some form of service not leave at least a dollar. And that means some cafeteria style places and buffets. If someone comes to you when you sit down, introduces themselves as a waiter and tries to serve you - they are a waiter. Now Cali I believe they get minimum plus tips but most states yes, you get $2.13 and hour and yes you tip out to food runners, the bar, bussers, etc. I worked in a place that made us tip out 15 percent for people who did not do anything for us. I think it was BS but the money was still decent and of course, nobody claimed all their tips with 15 percent staring them in the face. Regardless, I believe if you can't afford to tip than eat at home or eat fast food or take your own dishes, scrape them, plate them and wash and reset your table and get your own drinks and food. Of course, if your "service" was bad - then fine, I can understand leaving no tip.

THE WAY I LOOK AT IS THIS IS A FREE COUNTRY SO FEEL FREE TO LEAVE OR NOT LEAVE A TIP DO NOT FEEL ASHAME IF YOU DONT WE AS PATRONS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THIS. NOW YOU AS A COMPANY OR BUISINES NEED TO BECAUSE THEY ARE YOUR EMPLOYEES SO TAKE CARE OF THEM.AND REMEMBER ALL PEOPLE OF THE WORLD WE ALL HAVE THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE A BETTER LIFE AND CAREER AND IF YOU DO NOT THEN THATS YOUR FAULT!BECAUSE WE AS PATRONS OWE YOU NOTHING MORE THEN THE BILL. SO MAN UP AND FACE IT TIPPING IS NOT OWED TO ANY ONE CAUSE EATING OUT ANY MORE IS A LUXUARY SO STOP CRYING AND FIND A BETTER JOB! CAUSE I DO EVERY DAY IN THE CONSTRUCTION FIELD AND THE DAY I CANT PAY THE BILLS WITH THIS CAREER ILL FIND A JOB THAT I CAN.SO TALK WITH YOUR BOSS AND PLEASE STOP EXSPECTING THE PATRONS TO FILL IN THE REST OF YOUR PAY CHECK.THANKS

Posted by: WELLILLBE at October 7, 2009 2:26 AM

everybody seems to forget, their all wrapped up in the tip part....this girl walked out on your entire tab!! sure she had her agent come in and pay it 2 that's right 2 days later. folks that is a crime...no matter what state you live in!!

Posted by: Dan at October 7, 2009 2:29 AM

Folks,
When "Hung" gets hung out to dry and fails as a series they came hang it on "the bitch" and her agent. They ducked their responsibilities, got called out for it and then whined about it.
Loosers with out a doubt.

Wow...out control deficits, unaffordable health care, a government that truely represents every American who writes a big check, ill fought wars, failing infrastructure etc...I'm glad the important, riveting issues are occupying our collective gray matter and not the plight some cheap actress stiffing a disgruntled ex-waiter.

Posted by: dude at October 7, 2009 2:38 AM

don't they have service charges in america??? i think this whole thing is hilarious!!!

Posted by: Anonymous at October 7, 2009 2:56 AM

service charge for what? are you meaning the tab?

Posted by: WELLILLBE at October 7, 2009 3:05 AM

maybe i should ask my company to pay me a service charge for working on the alamo dome or better yet ask the owners of the dome to tip me for all the hard work i did -and i do rebar for a living, lol or better yet tell them to tip me for it,lol hell i provided a service ha! they would tip me all the way to the unemployment line get real folks!!!!

Posted by: WELLILLBE at October 7, 2009 3:17 AM

Really...the problem lays with the restaurant owners. They use tips to pay cooks, bartenders, hostesses, busboys, etc...they need to let the waitresses keep their tips. If the customer wants to tip the cook, he will. The owners use the tips to augment the under min wage workers so their pay will rise up to min wage. For all of you who think that a tip is optional, you just don't know what you're talking about. The waitress has to pay these other workers whether she gets tipped or not. If somebody doesn't tip or pay for a meal, it comes out of the waitresse's pocket. The owner gets his money, regardless, so he doesn't care & I'm not surprised this owner didn't press charges. HE had already gotten HIS money & took revenge out on the waiter for the bad publicity. The waiter did what he had to do to get paid. Restaurant owners should have to pay legal wages to all of the workers. If an owner can't afford it, maybe he should cut back on the help, make the lazy managers actually work, work there himself, or find another way to earn a living. He shouldn't profit from pimping out the waitresses.

Posted by: cheryl at October 7, 2009 10:18 AM

WELL THE BOTTOM LINE IS I DONT THINK WE AS PATRONS SHOULD FEEL OBLIGATED TO TIP(POOR OR RICH PEOPLE) IVE PAID MY MEAL LET THE MANAGERS PAY THE TIP THERES TIMES I MY SELF HAVE STRETCHED MY SELF TO TAKE MY FAMILY OUT TO EAT AND BARELY HAVE ENUFF TO PAY THE TAB AND DONT TIP .MY FAMILY COMES FIRST AND TO ENJOY A LUXUARY AS EATING OUT IS GREAT BUT TO FEEL BAD ABOUT NOT TIPPING IS WRONG ALL THE REASTURANT INDUSTRY HAS DONE IS PASSED A PROBLEM THAT THEY DONT WANT TO SOLVE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC OR SHOULD I SAY THERE JUST PASSING THE BUCK!SO LISTEN UP REST.OWNERS PAY YOUR PEOPLE RIGHT OR GET OUT OF THE BIZ!CAUSE HONESTLY IM TIRED OF FEELING I HAVE TO TIP YOUR EMPLOYEES FOR A SERVICE IM ALREADY PAYING WITH THE MEAL.AND FOR YOU FOLKS WHO SAY WELL DONT EAT OUT IF YOU CANT PAY A TIP.ILL EAT ANY DAMN WHERE I PLEASE CAUSE IVE WORKED MY ASS OFF! TO EAT OUT AND ITS MY RIGHT AS A HUMAN BEING SO BE PISSED AT YOUR OWNERS NOT US THE PUBLIC AND FOR THE BIZ OWNERS PUT SOME ONE AT THE DOOR SO THEY DONT RUN OUT ON THE TAB CAUSE THE WAY I SEE IT YOU ARE STEALING FROM YOUR OWN EMPLOYEES WHEN YOU MAKE THEM PAY THE WALKED OUT TAB.

Posted by: WELLILLBE at October 7, 2009 3:07 PM

does anyone know that the word TIPS means. IT means to insure proper service. YES is owed and required. Think this logic, if the restaurant had to pay people a wage food at $10 would be about $20 or more. When u dont tip, u show lack of respect of American society. Also by ,his twitter which is again freedom of speech, she showed she is again a facist not American.

Posted by: david at October 7, 2009 4:06 PM

BUFFET ANY ONE?LOL

Posted by: WELLILLBE at October 7, 2009 4:27 PM

WHAT ACTUALLY DOES TO INSURE PROPER SERVICE MEAN? WHO CAME UP WITH THIS? IF I WERE A MANAGER AND YOU DIDNT GIVE PROPER SERVICE TO THE CUSTOMER REGARDLESS IF THEY TIPPED OR NOT YOU WOULD BE HISTORY! AND YES YEARS AGO I DID WORK AS A SERVER AND TO BE HONEST I NEVER GOT UPSET ABOUT NOT GETTING TIPS BECAUSE I NEVER PUT IN MY HEAD THAT WAS OWED AS PART OF THE JOB.ANY WAY I GOT OUT AND WENT INTO CONSTRUCTION WHERE THE MONEY IS BETTER AND A LOT HARDER THEN SERVING.AND YES I DO BITCH AND CRY THAT MY FEET HURT,MY BACK HURTS,IM HOT,COLD.BUT I GUESS PACKING REBAR FOR 10HRS A DAY ON YOUR SHOULDERS WILL DO THAT TO YA AND WHEN I STARTED CONST IN 1987 THEY PAID 5.25 AN HR TO FEEL LIKE I SAID ABOVE,WELL IVE BEAT THIS HORSE TO DEATH AND PEOPLE WILL STILL CRY OVER TIPS AND ANY WAY WHO AM I? TO SAY ANY THING I JUST BUILD AMERICA.GOOD DAY!

Posted by: WELLILLBE at October 7, 2009 4:48 PM

OOO AND BY THE WAY TIA BRUHN WHO POSTED ABOVE IF ITS THAT BAD GET OUT OF THE BIZ! CAUSE I REALLY DONT FEEL BAD FOR YOU YOUR SMARTER THAN THAT.IM ABLE TO FALL BACK ON ABOUT 10 DIFFRENT JOBS AND IM 38YRS OLD AND BELEIVE ME CONSTUCTION WAS NOT MY 1ST CHOICE BUT THE MONEY WAS BETTER.HARD WORK BUT BILLS GOT PAID WITH OUT A STRUGGLE LIKE THEY SAY SOMETIMES THE HARDEST JOBS ARE THE BEST JOBS SO BREAK OUT THAT OL DEGREE AND TAKE THAT JOB FROM THAT LAZY ASS MANAGER YOU WORK FOR!PEACE

Posted by: WELLILLBE at October 7, 2009 5:20 PM

WELLIBE, if you're making so much money, why are you too broke to tip? If you don't tip, you should have the courtesy to explain to a manager why. Tell him you're too broke. But really, tips are not just tips anymore. The owners take big chunks to pay salaries. If you can't tip...don't eat out. Then the waitress won't be responsible to pay a percentage of your meal. You sound like a cheap SOB. My college daughter is a waitress & I'm sick of her being used & pimped out for what she has worked for.

Posted by: cheryl at October 7, 2009 6:56 PM

WELL CHERYL PULL YOUR HEAD OUT,LIKE I SAID ITS MY RIGHT TO TIP AND ITS YOUR DAUGHTER S JOB TO PROVIDE A SERVICE IF SHE DOES NOT LIKE IT MOVE TO ANOTHER JOB OR HEY WHY DONT YOU PAY HER EXSPENSE AND SHE WONT FEEL PIMPED OUT OR BETTER YET TALK TO HER EMPLOYEERS ABOUT A RAISE AND LETS SEE WHERE THAT GOES? O AND LIKE I SAID IM A IRON WORKER ONE OF THE HARDEST JOBS AROUND ! SO I KNOW HARD WORK.GOOD DAY

Rush Limbough says a normal tip should be 18%. Less if service poor, great if service good

This Anon person wih his/her view on tipping has got to be a foreigner. Most likely Indian or Asian.

You don't like or understand our customs...go home!

Just judging by the number of comments here and the fact that this story made it to the front page of MSN I don't think actress Jane Adams will ever forget to tip again. It's these type of stories that damage a person's credibility and image with the public on a personal level. As for the posters describing freedom of speech issues, that man had every right to post his thoughts and or feelings about the actress Jane Adams unless he signed a non-disclosure agreement with his employer. If she really thought it that big of a deal she should try and sue him for libel (but she would loose horribly because you have to prove injury and attach a monetary amount based upon viewership)

Posted by: PR_Guru at October 10, 2009 4:24 PM

OK really.. as someone who waits tables for a living, I can say that she was in the wrong. I can also say that as someone with a shred of common sense. NOBODY "forgets" to pay their tab, unless they're drunk. It's like claiming you forgot to pay for your jeans at nordstrom. You know the process of eating out is going to end with paying a check. She's full of s#@$ if she says otherwise. Also, yes, you do have to tip unless you don't ever plan to come back to that restaurant again. Otherwise, we WILL remember your face, and on your next visit you'll get the service you paid for last time. Thankfully, the restaurant I work for adds a 20% service charge to every check, which is not optional. Just like paying for labor is not optional with a mechanic or a carpenter. You have been provided with a service! By the way, I love my job! Especially since I don't have to depend on the kindness of strangers for my living at this particular place.
