Is the richest woman in France being abused by her own daughter? That is the accusation by the L'Oreal heiress, who is not claiming physical violence, only "moral violence" in the form of the daughter filing to classify the mother as mentally unsound.

The daughter has been trying for some time to make her mother a ward of the state and prove that shje is no longer fit to live independently or make her own decisions in her impaired elderly state. But the mother insists this "amount to a psychological violence". Control of a huge fortune and inheritance is of course at stake in this unfortunate dispute.

France's richest woman, Liliane Bettencourt, has filed a suit accusing her daughter of "abuse", in the latest of a series of family disputes. Lawyers for the L'Oreal heiress said Francoise Meyers-Bettencourt's attempt to have her mother declared mentally unsound amounted to "moral violence". Liliane Bettencourt's fortune is the focus of several judicial inquiries. One involves allegations of illegal donations to Nicolas Sarkozy's presidential campaign in 2007. In September, police searched the main offices of his political party in response to claims made by the 87-year-old heiress's former butler.
