Take it from someone who plays basketball and can dunk: Josh placed the tape strip there to help him calculate the second-to-last step (the most important one). That's why he placed it on the left, so he could see it. Of course he never intended to jump from there, that's ridiculous. The point is he did a TWO HANDED dunk from the free throw line, who's done that before? Vince went with two hands in 2000, but took off a foot or so inside the line and barely made it, whereas Josh did it with ease and great style and leg movement. The commentators were stupid!
