Ryan Seacrest Bummed About Paula (AUDIO)

Many have suspected this was coming for a long time now, but the news that Paula Abdul is finally leaving American Idol was still a surprise to at least one person.

Ryan Seacrest, the show's longtime host, said on his top-rated radio show that he was shicked and stunned to hear Paula's twitter announcement that she will not return to American Idol in this coming season. Ryan says he was not aware of Paula's decision and has no reason to believe it is a publicity stunt. But although he believes the announcement is real, he still seems to hold out hope that Paula will change her mind and return, Brett Favre style.

You can hear Ryan Seacrest's comments below, the recording is not great quality so you maywant to turn your volume up:

Ryan Seacrest is as surprised as the rest of us by the news that Paula Abdul is leaving American Idol. "The news stunned me last night," he said Wednesday on his KISS FM radio show. "I was shocked..."

Brian's 'sea' has finally 'crested' and I knew it was going to happen when he included a 4th judge on the panel.

I don't understand what FOX is doing Paula and
Simon are the best ones on the show. I don't even like that Kara...

Posted by: Brenda at August 6, 2009 2:51 PM

Paula was always interesting I don't like Kara at all !!

Posted by: david bundy at August 6, 2009 5:59 PM

She was too soft and coudn't tell the truth sometimes, but she also was an intregal part and personality on the show.It won;t be the same, and I think less popular.Kara is a little ruff and arrogant for me.

Posted by: peter koutsoukos at August 6, 2009 7:03 PM

Actually, half the time when Paula opens her mouth, what comes out makes no sense at all. Don't think she will be missed that much, unless if is for her faux pas.

Posted by: barb at August 6, 2009 8:20 PM

Fox was crazy to let her go. She was the only kind one on the show. Won't watch any more I would take 100 Paula"s to one of that new crazy judge Kara. I bet fox will lose alot of viewers because of this. I didn't like Kara from the start she thought she knew it all.

Posted by: a arenson at August 7, 2009 12:44 AM

We will not watch the show in our house without her on it. Simon got a huge contract and Paula is just as much a part of the show as he is.

Posted by: JR at August 8, 2009 8:35 AM

I am so sorry to hear about Paula leaving A.I. I was hoping it was just a rumor. Simon & Paula were the very best, especially for "entertainment."
Randy Jackson is also good, but the newcomer, Kara ? is not going to hold water. She just doesn't have what it takes. Paula kept things interesting, even though at times she was too soft with her comments. I am sorry to see her go, wish she would change her mind.

Posted by: Anna at August 8, 2009 8:40 AM

I do not think the show will do well without Paula, we all love her regardless and she made the show fun to watch. The other lady is nothing like her and we will all miss Paula very much..Hope Simon Stay's other wise I am out!!

Posted by: Susan at August 8, 2009 9:20 AM

What is Fox thinking. Paula makes me laugh with her sometimes crazy comments. Her and Simon together make the show. Come on Fox get with it

Posted by: nancy at August 8, 2009 9:38 AM

This will hurt the show. Kara will not last either no one likes her, she stunk from the begining. Simon , Paula, & Randy made the show. When you have a good thing don't change it. As for me and most of my friends we won't watch any more. They should have paid Paula the amount as
Simon, they should have paid them all the same.

Posted by: TJ at August 8, 2009 9:52 AM

Very sad that Paula Abdul was pushed off the show by Kara. I don't think I will be watching anymore. First the phone incident with the finals last year which was never addressed and then this. Kara should be the one to go. She really adds nothing to the show at all.

Posted by: ss at August 8, 2009 11:03 AM

How can one justify paying Ryan Crest over 11 mil for what he does? Prodcers can go to any casting agency and hire a host of equal or better talent for scale.

Posted by: sean at August 8, 2009 11:05 AM

It's a shame Paula won't be on the show. I do not like Kara and probably won't watch the show. Kara is just awful. I hope Paula comes back, all the guys on the show seen to like her.

Posted by: Mona K at August 8, 2009 11:12 AM

Paula’s exit form the show will definitely affect the quality, humor, objectivity and diversity of the show; thereby making the show far more, less popular with the television audience. If I were an advertiser I would be reexamining my commitment to the program

Posted by: jeff at August 8, 2009 11:36 AM

Without Paula, the show will not be the same. She brought glamour and glitz, real entertainment to the program. Her poking fun at Simon was the best. Those two were crazy about each other and it brought us laughs. I will not be watching the show either without Paula. Either she comes back or the show fails! All said and done, I hope FOX is reading the worlds comments.

Posted by: Kay at August 8, 2009 12:05 PM

too bad never liked Kara will not be watching American Idol. I know one does not make a differene, but I am not the only one I know

Posted by: sandra liszt at August 8, 2009 12:20 PM

Paula was a big pluss. Kara will never be able to fill Paula's shoes, not by a long shot. She seems more full of herself than careing about much of anything else. I wish Paula only the best.

It's About Time! She couldn't get a sentance out that made sense half the time. Now get rid of Kara.....and bring in someone with more heart than these two...who knows how to tell the truth without being harsh and demoralizing.

Posted by: Kim at August 8, 2009 1:09 PM

Paula had a lot of problems. She was too childish on too many occasions for my taste. Kara gives accurate assessments and does know the buisiness. The simpathy vote is still present with the voters. Many vote for contestants they would not buy a ticket for. I don't.

Posted by: Loki Westdahl at August 8, 2009 1:10 PM

Idol, God is a jealous God and he has never liked idols. Thank God she's gone and maybe she'll repent for being part of it.

Posted by: JJ at August 8, 2009 1:18 PM

We are really sorry to see Paula go...She was our favorite...We watched the show as a family and we never did get the new girl, Kara......She just never seemed to fit......the show won't be the same....

Posted by: SARA MELL at August 8, 2009 1:22 PM

The show is not strong enough without her. Why not acquiesce to her demands and stay with a successful formula. The current rhetoric will increase your viewing audience by 25 to 30% nielson ratings. If she does not come back, I can almost guarantee that this will be your last year.

Posted by: OndGo at August 8, 2009 1:23 PM

I was considering not watching Idol this year if they kept Kara on. Now that Kara is in and Paula is out, I will discontinue watching. I have not missed a show in 8 years. I feel very strongly about this. Very foolish decision for Paula not to be wooed into staying.

Posted by: Deb at August 8, 2009 1:25 PM

It is about friggin time. I am glad the airhead is gone. She is a dance
expert...well maybe! For sure not a singing expert. I mean, what has she
really done or accomplished from a singing standpoint as an artist that
anyone could not have done with a little marketing and butt shaking. She had
a handful of booty shaking songs that without the sex marketed video, would
not have done squat. We use to mute her comments anyway because of the
totally ignorant attempts she made to sound intelligent. It would be funny
if her attempts at trying to give a knowledgeable critic had not been so
totally ridiculous. I am glad she is finally gone. Now the show needs to
find a female judge with real knowledge and personality to replace Paula and
Kara. Kara has the knowledge, just not much personality. I will finally
enjoy American Idol. No more totally dumb comments from a no singing talent
airhead that couldn't get a sentence out without stumbling all over herself.
Some of the best news in the entertainment world this year!!!! She might have a chance at So you think you can dance if Nigel could put up with her childishness and ignorance.....laughing out loud

Posted by: Steve at August 8, 2009 1:37 PM

Crazy to let her go, she deserves so much more, as she is the heart of the show giving encouragement to those who need it and showing passion. Let the other female go and let her have the 10 million she is asking for.

Posted by: Bill MacLean at August 8, 2009 1:57 PM

Paula is a truly lovable and zany woman with all her faults. She brought warmth and laughter to the show which will be irreplacable. The powers that be at Fox have lost their ability to read the publics desire to be entertained and Paula was integral to the enetertainment factor . We have all come to know Randy Simon Paula and Ryan as a team if not a family thathas succeeded to make us, the public, all a part of. Kara is a very intelligent woman with great knowledge but to try and replace Paula with Kara will be a dreadful mistake. In this dire economic climate the public needs to feel the warmth and hope that only Paula could imbue no matter how crazy she can be, in fact the crazier the more entertaining the show is. Paula is the female human factor and she appeals to our emotions which the show definately has become successful for. There is chemistry that cannot be replaced between the team so I hope and pray that you at Fox will seriously see that Paula has equal if not maybe even a little more worth than you have given her credit for. By allowing her to leave, the show will never be the same.

Posted by: Anonymous at August 8, 2009 2:24 PM

It's so sad she will be gone I loved to watch just to see what her next life changing stunt was ginna be and you never knew when she opened her mouth what trash was gonna spew out..How refreshing Paula Unleashed. I hope she gets a great new offer someplace and puts Idol out of Biz

Posted by: Alexus at August 8, 2009 2:28 PM

Paula was not always honest with the contestants and seem to feel sorry for many of them instead of giving them information that would help them do better in their performance. If the contestants want to be in the entertainment business they have to have thick skin. I think the show will do fine without Paula. I happen to like Kara who is honest with her assesment of the contestants. American Idol will still be in business. Paula is being greedy. Many people don't have jobs and are losing their homes. She cannot spend all the money she is now making.

Posted by: Eugenia Hayes at August 8, 2009 3:01 PM

Fox Network, have you lost your ability to see a good judge on a great program, Idol. I think you have. Contract renewal offers have way exceeded their status quo. I guess you don't care if no one watches Idol. As for Kara-you must be blind to think she is better than Paula, Kara is conceded, self centered and cold. The 3 original judges made the Idol what it is. You are throwing away a good program by changing it. I would say that most people enjoying watching the program because of Paula, Simon and Randy.

Posted by: Arlene at August 8, 2009 3:42 PM

Honestly. She was a nutcase most of the time. But what popstar isn't? She was amazing, and I know that I won't be watching idol much next season only the first few episodes which are unbelievably hilarious. Fox definitly should have given her the money she deserved. They have made a huge mistake and Paula made the best decision.

Posted by: Nikki at August 8, 2009 3:42 PM

Simon is making 50 mil a season, Paula is only make 2 mil she asked for 14... do the math... you'd def be outraged if you were her. It obviously wasn't worth the money for her.

Posted by: anon at August 8, 2009 3:46 PM

Fox has quite simply made a big mistake. No doubt about it. They will realize their mistake when the ratings plummet without Paula. She was great, fun, intelligent and just crazy with Simon..so much fun to watch them together. I'm will not be watching it next season. Too bad. Paula Abdul will find something better and well she should.

I really feel Paula had something to add to the show...PIZAAZ! Kara is NOT a good replacement. She is way too involved in herself to be there for the contestants. We didn't like her comments at all this past season. Paula was always there to be the cheerleader for the singers. We will miss her:(

Posted by: Jayme at August 8, 2009 4:28 PM

My my my, everyone thinks that Paula was too soft, well don't you know that all of the judges had a scripted part, and that was hers, so get off of her case. I believe in giving everyone a fair chance, so lets support Kara, and pray that the show does go on, because it is in a class by itself, how many other shows, (especially clean ones)can bring the whole family, and entire world together each season, nobody but IDOL, Paula I wish you the best, because you are the BEST, and remember that for everything there is a season, and this unfortunately was your season. FOX could have met your request, but now even if they would, it would not mean the same, and you would always be under the microscope, and that would not be fair to you, so all is well Paula, we love you, remember when GOD closes a window, he opens a door, so Paula walk right on in.

It's a big mistake to replace Paula by kara. Paula was as big a part of the show as Simon was. I was always eager to hear her comments because she made me smile. Not too many people expresses themselves as Paula did and that was her charm. American Idol will not be the same and I'm afraid that that change will be the precursor of more things to come (think about The View). Kara is not as special as Paula and does not have her appeal. I'm disappointed. Good luck Fox!

Paula, Randy, and ofcourse Simon ARE the show. Get rid of that other chick, she adds NOTHING to the show.

Posted by: Anonymous at August 8, 2009 6:08 PM

I knew she was leaving when they brought that other woman on. Doesn't take a rocket scientist. She sees this show is not for long, it has pretty much ran it's course.Look at all the other shows out there that are imitating it in one form or another. Just as boring. It gets old.

Posted by: sandy at August 8, 2009 7:05 PM

I say dump Ryan and Kara and keep Paula! I've never seen what everyone sees in Seacrest. He's not even cute! And, to pay him $45 million? Ridiculous! I don't watch Idol very much because of Ryan....he's just annoying.

Posted by: Deb at August 8, 2009 8:11 PM

I think Fox made a big mistake not giving Paula ,the money she was asking for.Paula is what made American idol what it is.Paula made it funny and entertaining, she gave the singer's a chance if she had not some of them wouldn't,have made it.The show will not be the same without Paula,it will not do as well, alot of people will stop watching it. Fox please rethink thing's so that American Idol will continue doing well, and for paula please change your mind and come back to Idol.If i do not enjoy the begining of Idol with Paula being gone i will stop watching it.So please reconsider it so the show will still do well.

The show will be boring and lifeless without Paula
I can not stand the new gal, cant remember her name because she is a dull person who by the way is no songwriter as far as i am concerned. Hope the show fails this season......

Posted by: Barbara L at August 8, 2009 10:22 PM

I don't think I will be watching the show. Fox deserve the rating to drop of the show. Paula was the show ... It will not be thew same with Kara, what's hewr face.

Posted by: Pandagrl at August 8, 2009 10:24 PM

I don't like Kara really at all. She's just to plain for me. I like Paula's way of spicing up the show with her antics off and on the show. (-: She'll be missed and we likely won't watch anymore honestly. Don't think she deserves as much as Simon because he's also the Exec. Producer but she should have gotten more.

Posted by: Misty at August 8, 2009 10:31 PM

I have been watching American Idol since season one and I have enjoy every season so far. Each of the Judges has play an integral part of the show and for the Producers or whomever is responsible for negoating the monetary deals among Simon, Randy Paula and Ryan should be uterly ashame of themselves for treating Paula with such dis-respect on the offer they made her. The show will not be the same with her not being at the table; the viewers could see she has always been glue that held the contestants together when their hopes were dash by Randy and Simon. Good luch with the ratings you have been enjoying you will surly notice the difference next season.

Paula will be missed. I don't even like Kara, she's so full of herself. She doesn't even sing that well. She shouldn't even be a judge. Paula was a star. And all of you haters who say otherwise should just shut up. It's so tired. Just leave Paula alone. She was the only one who believed in Adam Lambert when he auditioned. The only one who believes in the contestants and she should've been offered way more money than Ryan. He doesn't even do the job well. He's so annoying. Oh well. Like American Idol is really gonna actually listen to its viewers. They should, but they won't.

Posted by: Darla at August 8, 2009 11:23 PM

The show without Paula will be dull. The interaction between Paula and Simon spiced things up. Paula is a good sport.

I probably will not watch all of the auditions, since Paula's comments were so entertaining and she won't be there.

Have been looking forward to a new season, but without Paula, not so much.

Posted by: Linda at August 9, 2009 12:15 AM

IDOL without Paula is not IDOL at all it's like DOL(DULE). She is as important as the contestants and the other judges, besides Kara, which I was sickened by Every time she opened her mouth. She is so fake. Paula is real and very much related to "normal" everyday people. She has a comfort about her. She should be making no less than simon or randy or ryan. Why was she? Fox you still have time to save your show, Offer her the money she deserves and has earned. Paula please accept the offer if it's given we need you and will not watch if you don't return. I mean if this is the way FOX treats it's own, it's not a family channel at all and doesn't deserve to be acknowledged in any line up. Please Fox do the right thing. Good luck Paula we love you.

Even though Paula frequently came off as a looney,
she was an integral part of the show. I'm sorry to see her go and I agree with a lot of the posters about Kara. I don't like her, either. To me, she brought nothing, and I found her to be a bit condescending. I look for the American Idol ratings to drop significantly.

Posted by: Anita at August 9, 2009 1:14 AM

I've watched every season - Paula is a valuable part of the show. Without her the ratings will drop. Kara is boring, does not fit in with the others and her comments did not mean anything to me - I was hoping she wouldnt come back. There needs to be a compasionate judge to soften the harsh criticizism and it is not Kara, Simon or Randy. It was a big mistake not to give Paula the money she was asking for.

Posted by: MMI at August 9, 2009 1:21 AM

I am shocked that Fox let Paula go and offered her so much less than Simon and Ryan Seacrest. She is just as important to the show as they are. I don't like Kara at all. She adds nothing to the show, shows off by making fun after saying that she could do better than the contestant and then sings the song. Kara only looked stupid by showing up in a bikini like that contestant was wearing ( same contestant she had made fun of before, and now was performing.
Kara adds nothing to the show!
