Oscar G. Mayer, retired chairman of the Wisconsin-based meat processing company that bears his name, has died at the age of 95.

Mayer's wife, Geraldine, said that he died of old age Monday at Hospice Care, in Fitchburg.

He was the third Oscar Mayer in the family that founded Oscar Mayer Foods, which was once the largest private employer in Madison. His grandfather, Oscar F. Mayer, died in 1955, and his father, Oscar G. Mayer Sr., died in 1965.

Mayer retired as chairman of the board in 1977 at age 62 soon after the company recorded its first $1 billion year. The company was later sold to General Foods, and is now a business unit of Kraft.

Mayer's first wife, Rosalie, died in 1998. He married Geraldine Fitzpatrick in 1999.

it would have been clever had they buried him in a coffin that looked like a hot dog bun

SEABEA, THAT WAS SO INSENSITIVE AND NOT AT ALL CLEVER. IF YOU CAN'T SAY SOMETHING NICE JUST DON'T POST ANYTHING.

We all are either dying or already dead. I thought Seabee's comment was lighthearted, humorous and tasteful...kind of like the hotdog itself.

I am so sorry for you lose. I always thought of Oscar Mayer as a frendly person. My children and I always ate your products. May his soul rest in piece. He truly was a people person. My prayers and good wishes to your family and friends.

What a hugh loss in this time of world trouble and corruption. Oscar Mayer and his company is a true "Household Name" and he will be truly missed.

I am 60 years old and when I was a young boy I had the privilage to ride in the Weiner Wagon. Some say no big deal, but to me it was the thrill of a life time.

He will be missed, but, fortunatly his legacy carries on.

May God Bless His Soul and Keep Him

Oscar Mayer was a man,
Who fed the world a treat.
Some said it looked like a body part,
Which hangs above one's feet.

We ate his yummy "tube meat",
On streets and at ball games.
We use it in our language,
And sometimes as nick names.

Kids wanted to be a "wiener",
They would sing that and get paid.
I only wish that they could watch,
How wieners were truly made.

Now we say farewell to old man Oscar,
Who will live forever in our hearts.
For this poem I will be banned from the internet,
but I doubt the articles writer has the smarts.
