FDA: "Tylenol = Liver Damage"?

FDA: "Tylenol = Liver Damage"?
source

Even a small amount of Tylenol and similar generic brands of acetaminophen could cause liver damage. The FDA's newest guidelines say the maximum daily dose listed on Tylenol and dozens of other painkillers should be reduced to help curb deadly overdoses, according to several news announcements published by the Associated Press on June 30, 2009.

As far back as 2006, studies like the FDA finding warned consumers that acetaminophen, the main ingredient in Tylenol and similar generic brands with the same ingredients is dangerious for liver damage. This comes in the face of the fact that Tylenol is Americans' over-the-counter painkiller of choice. Acetaminophen overdose is also the leading cause of acute liver damage and failure according to the FDA.

According to the 2006 article, "Tylenol Found to Cause Liver Damage, Even in Small Doses," published July 5, 2006 in Natural News, "Healthy adults who took the maximum dose of Tylenol for two weeks were found to have liver damage," according to a study the FDA found in the July 2006 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. See, "Aminotransferase Elevations in Healthy Adults Receiving 4 Grams of Acetaminophen Daily: A Randomized Controlled Trial," Paul B. Watkins; Neil Kaplowitz; John T. Slattery; Connie R. Colonese; Salvatore V. Colucci; Paul W. Stewart; Stephen C. Harris, JAMA. 2006;296:87-93.

I think the FDA is making a huge mistake by cutting back the dosage on some drugs and banning others altogether. It will drive those people with chronic and severe pain straight to drug dealers. It is hard enough to get the necessary pain medication from a doctor. By banning and cutting back on what people need for their pain, they will go to dealers for help in releiving that pain. They won't care where it comes from. I myself have been taking Tylenol for over 30 years, I have never had liver damage. What the FDA is doing is a big mistake and it is going to backfire on them. Thank you.

IT IS NOT A HUGE MISTAKE, Helen!

Look for a different source of remedy that is healthy... try checking into what is causing you to have so many headaches and then resolve that issue as apposed to taking medz to cover up and blanket an imbalance within your body...and adding fuel to the fire of bringing more toxins and chemicals into your body that only bring stress and strain to the liver and kidneys and preventing them from doing their job effeciently. Remember... added stress to your body over time or in combination of other issues creates lead to adrenal fatigue and exhaustion, depletion of DHEA, chronic cortisol release, added belly fat and hormone imbalances. And if it is a tension headache it can be relieved through meditative practice or yoga, or deep breathing, or tai chi, massages, and magnesium, etc...

So take yourself out of the OLD SCHOOL mindset and get yourself in tune with living a healthier lifestyle!!!!!

I totally agree with Loren, and Helen if people are driven to look to street drugs to alleviate pain then they are going back to what they know, and should maybe do another stint in rehab.....

Unfortunatly, I need to take a tylenol pm every night before I go to bed and then it still takes me 1/2 hour, hour or longer to fall asleep. I even toss and turn in the middle of the night. I hate to hear this news, because I don't know what other method to use. I do not agree with Helen for starts. But I don't want to go to the doctor to be put on a sleep aide. Any suggestions? I'd rather not take anything at all, but with 2 kids and working full time, I've found that I can't get a good nights rest without taking one tylenol pm. I have even talked with other individuals who have suggested drinking a glass or 2 of wine. Sometimes i notice that this will calm me down, but usually doesn't enough to shut my mind off.

Mindy, unless your sleep problems are pain related, you can try "Simply Sleep". It's made by tylenol and is the same as Tylenol PM, except without the acetaminophen. The sleep inducing ingredient is the same as Benadryl. Alcohol may help people fall asleep but actually acts as a stimulant and will usually lead to poorer quality sleep. I'd suggest looking into stress reduction techniques and "sleep hygiene" changes. Also, a trip to the doctor might result in something other than an Rx for sleep aids. Maybe there's something else going on affecting your sleep. Good luck!

Thanks Sabrina for your suggestions. I will try the "Simply Sleep". I will look more at my "sleep hygiene" also and maybe make some changes.

Bottom line, unless acetaminophen is taken off the shelves all together, people will simply take more than the maximum suggested dosage to effectively relieve their pain. This is already a common practice and if anyone has taken notice, many products that used to contain acetaminophen (such as Alka Seltzer Plus Cold or Cold & Flu) have removed acetaminophen and replaced it with other pain relievers (such as Bayer aspirin). In my opinion, it won't be long before the FDA removes it from the shelves, as this already seems to be the direction they are taking. The common pain reliever used in my home is ibuprofen because it is also an anti-inflammatory drug (the only thing that eased my pain when I had an abcessed tooth).

Try Advil Cold and Sinus. Or they have allergy medicines OTC now like Clariton. Ask the pharmacist and they can help you find something that doesn't contain acetaminophen. As for Helen, I think you're going a little too extreme when you're suggesting that people will turn to drug dealers for pain relief. There are too many alternatives to Tylenol out there for people to try for it to turn into something like that. I could crack open my medication book from nursing school and name at least a dozen!

Alternative pills to Tylenol that contain Asirin are not side effects free & just as Tyleol should not be taken for long priod of time.If there is a small pecentage of people that overdose , mjority should not suffer. Beside,Advil & Iboprofen contain ASPIRIN.

Posted by: Hana at July 2, 2009 5:49 PM

They should replace the acetaminophen with a safer over the counter pain reliever, like asprin. For those that can't take asprin maybe something like Motrin. It's common sense. Asprin has been around forever and it also has an anti-inflammatory effect. I haven't bought Tylenol since it came out, there was a warning right on the bottle about it, and I refused to take it while I was pregnant, as at the time it was a newer drug. Know something about what you are taking before you take it, read everything.

The only hard part about removing tylenol from the shelves is that, pregnant women for example, are told not to take anything BUT tylenol. So what are they going to be told to take now? And, if they can take something else, then why were we told not to take those things to begin with?

Aspirin burns holes in your stomach and potentially causes bleeding ulcers...Advil, Aleve, etc. also cause liver damage. Now Tylenol = Liver Damage...what's next?

I have taken Tylenol for for about 20 years- however, Tylenol PM's every since they came out on the market. Three month's ago, I collapsed on the job. The testing in the E.R. proved my liver enzymes were 'Off the chart', and that I needed 8 months of IV infusion therapy. Well, two days after that I collapsed again and was admitted into cardiac; an oncologist asked what meds I was on. I told him- but it was when I mentioned Tylenol PM- he said, "There's your culprit." I just was released from another hospital for the same condition. Liver function tests concluded my liver is damaged beyond repair. I'm 48- don't drink and do not do drugs- but my liver enzymes equal to that of a person who was a IV drug user.I'm beyond disbelief and so sick- I'm just about bedridden. The FDA is far behind in their review of OTC and pain meds, dosage and usage and abuse, let alone the dangerous repercussions I now am living proof of. Thank's alot FDA /Tylenol- I could of used this news 20 years ago. For those who are in chronic pain- I feel for you, and God only knows how all of you are going to cope bedcause of other people's abuse.

In 1990, working in the Cardiovascular ICU, a prominent notice was posted up on the dangers of Tylenol, and Ibuprophen even in small amounts. This was known by medical staff, drug companies, health agencies even then. It was stated CLEARLY that they not only caused liver damage but kidney failure. Diabetes is an epidemic, kidney transplants, and hemodialysis on the rise. Sadly, years later, we are seeing the results of this failure by physicians and drug companies to inform the public of the very real death threatening consequences of taking these over the counter drugs. Keep these drug from your children as if it was the plague.

I agree with helen. People should find root of their pain and mask it with a pain medication. There are so many alternative to tylenol. There is nutrition, homeopathy, accupuncture, chinese medicine, massage, yoga etc. Popping a pill everytime there is a problem will never relieve of the problem. Shouldn't solving the problem be the goal.
