Census: Moms Brinigng Home the Bacon!


The latest data from the Census Bureau says that more moms are bringing home the bacon than ever before, as women are the providers for the families at a higher rate than has ever been recorded before.

Is it a measure of changing gender roles, increased opportunities for women, or simply the tough financial times meaning whoever finds employment in the family has to take it? Perhaps a mix of each? An analyst from the University of New Hampshire said "Women are really stepping in and helping families stay afloat. The question is whether men are stepping up and picking up the slack around home." And experts analyzing the data agreed that the recession is pushing everyone towards more egalitarian attitudes about who should be the breadwinner for the family. Hopefully these more progressive attitudes will remain with us after the economic hard times go away, and at that point moms will still be free to work but only if they prefer to, not because there's no other choice.
