Self-Control Contagious?

You've surely noticed that some kids have self-control and some kids don't, and the same for some adults, but new psychological studies say that self control may be contagious, and how much the people around you have will influence how much you have.

The study, done by the UGA department of psychology, suggests that surrounding yourself with people who have good habits will encourage you to do the same, and the opposite will have the reverse effect. Not surprising to be sure, but still interesting to get this scientific verification, as published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. And the study showed this trend carries across most any behavior, not just the obvious like drinking, smoking or healthy eating.

Before patting yourself on the back for resisting that cookie or kicking yourself for giving in to temptation, look around. A new University of Georgia study has revealed that self-control -- or the lack thereof -- is contagious. In a just-published series of studies involving hundreds of volunteers, researchers have found that watching or even thinking about someone with good self-control makes others more likely exert self-control, and vice versa.
