Florida Couple Slaying Suspects: Dressed in Ninja Garb

Please put these people right here UNDER THE JAIL.

Investigators were hoping for more arrests today in the shooting deaths of a Florida Panhandle couple who had adopted a dozen children with autism, Down syndrome and other disabilities.

Authorities made three arrests over the weekend and a fourth Monday evening. Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said he hoped to make one or two arrests today. Morgan told ABC's ''Good Morning America'' that authorities have tied at least seven people to the crime but that nothing links any of the suspects to the family directly.

Morgan said day laborer Gary Lamont Sumner was arrested on a murder charge in a nearby county Monday after he was pulled over in a traffic stop. The sheriff said investigators have placed Sumner at the scene of the killings of Byrd and Melanie Billings, though he wouldn't provide details.

The couple took care to make their nine-bedroom house a safe place for their growing brood of children, wiring it with surveillance cameras in every room.

It was those cameras that captured images of the masked men who shot the wealthy couple Thursday in a break-in executed with chilling precision.

How anyone could kill such wonderful people is beyond me. Hope Florida has the death penalty up and running !

Leonard patrick gonzales jr, aka "pat poff" when i knew him in high school in gulf breeze 18-20 yrs ago. he was a bully and loser then and still is, surprised it took him this long to kill someone. most people were scared of him even though he was short, he def had napoleonic complex and mix that with a blackbelt in martial arts and you have time bomb. he reminded me of the blonde bad karate guy johnny in karate kid. he always walked with an air in him. well looks like he finally has been de-flated. i pray for you pat poff. May God have mercy on your soul!

Like the death penalty would solve anything.
I bet you think that an execution is less of a burden on the taxpayers than life without parol.
Last I heard it cost the state of FLorida $800,000
on average per execution.

Posted by: Neal at July 15, 2009 10:08 AM

These murders showed NO mercy or compassion for their victims or families. Who now will take these children with their disabilities, maybe back to the state, or you Neal? I didn't think so. These people took kids that no one else was standing in line to adopt. The murders were looking for money and weren't going to let anything stand in their way. $800,000 to get scum like this off the steet forever, I say warm up old sparky.

Posted by: scott at July 15, 2009 10:40 AM

What a bunch of barbarians... And I am not talking only of the murderders, but also of those supporting the death penalty. Good on you, congratulations! You can play God now...

Posted by: Pagan at July 15, 2009 10:47 AM

Pagan - Perhaps you haven't heard. God says, "He that sheds man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed" Statistics show that for every murderer executed a large number of lives are saved; through the deterrence afforded by fear of the death penalty.

I say eye for an eye just like the bible I think we need to bring back town Hangings. We need to learn something from some of the other countries about how they deal with people like this stonings ect.

Posted by: 1saltyreefer at July 15, 2009 11:08 AM

Joe, God says that? Are you sure? Because whenever I talk to him, he's never brought that up. Are you sure it's not the Bible that says that, or perhaps some other religious text written by man?

I just can't imagine God actually saying that. He's usually pretty cool whenever I talk to him.

Posted by: Hey Joe at July 15, 2009 11:15 AM

you guys are dumb.I agree public hangings. Yes eye for an eye, these people are scum. Money is a piece of paper, you think the families of these people care about how much the government spends to keep these people in jail?Tie em up,let the family of the victims chop these guy's heads off and drive it through 3 states

how much training could it take for these miscreants to home invade a couple who have mostly children who are mentally a physically challenged.Seems the killers should have been in a special home themselve. There is that special place in hell for these creeps, move over Hitler, Sadam,Jack the Ripper.

Posted by: Linda at July 15, 2009 11:39 AM

Well, OK Neal and Pagan, We the real people will now move ALL the poor killers in to live with you. You seem to have all the right answers. Or should we move you in with them in one little holding cell and tell them that you were the one who turned them in and see if it is OK with you that they first kill all your family members and then torture you to death last. Maybe, just maybe you haven't really been listening to God, just talking to him. Sometime just try to listen to him, could change your life.

Posted by: Whoever at July 15, 2009 11:53 AM

Well, if you're going to be murdered, what better way than by ninjas.

Posted by: Devan at July 15, 2009 11:56 AM

You say Execution costs so much but Public Stonings Cost Nothing!!! Either that or go back to public hangings people would maybe think twice.

Posted by: Andrew at July 15, 2009 12:02 PM

i agree.. yes i believe these murders should be sentenced to death but we are not judge or jury.
and yes the bible does say eye for eye and yes there is a very special place in hell for people like this but really people instead of everyone fighting over what is going to or should happened to the scum that did this why is everyone not standing up and fighting for those wonderful children who need someone who lost their security and lives and mom and dad really people where is your conpassion and heart??????

Posted by: audrea at July 15, 2009 12:04 PM

In Texas it has been working for years (death penalty). They reap what hey sow

Posted by: Marty at July 15, 2009 12:09 PM

The point is thus: Neal and Pagan stated merely that individual acts of violence such as those committed by the two masked individuals are viewed as atrocious and absolutely abhorred and rightly so. However, violence committed by the state under the auspices of the death penalty, it somehow is accepted and somehow fulfills justice under the law.
Every poster is so vehement on judging another person and assumes he/she knows exactly who is in Hell: Hitler, Jack the Ripper, etc. HOW DO YOU KNOW who is burning in hell and who isn't? As if any of these people know the psychosis of these so-called damned people whilst they lived or the two masked ninja men who murdered the poor elderly couple. Look at the crimes, look at the evidence, look at the people's state of mind and the intent. There must be an empirical analysis of everything. And if the perpetrators are found guilty, then let them atone for their crimes behind the walls of a cell and let them not become "humanely" murdered by a society which prides itself on Judeo-Christian morals and values.

Posted by: Voice of Reason at July 15, 2009 12:11 PM

The penalty? Honestly? Can you honestly call yourself better than these men when you are calling for their ? An eye for an eye leaves all the world blind. Did not Jesus also say love thy enemy? Is it love to end their life? The bible was written for an age when the judicial system was barely getting started. There wasn't much wiggle room for criminals outside of banishment or . We have evolved since then. Those of you who call for to solve are living in the past. These men deserve punishment, but not .

Posted by: Darkrai at July 15, 2009 12:13 PM

My heart goes out to this family. Thank goodness they had enough foresight to have a plan in place should something happen to the both of them. Last I heard, the couple had an older daughter and son who have vowed to continue their parents' legacy AND keep all of the kids together. God bless them all.

That hurts....no true Ninja clan would have these morons.

I think John Carpenter had a great idea with Escape from New York, let's wall off Manhattan and let'em all loose and free in there. We can call it the "Savage Land".

And "Voice of Reason" what kind of psychobabble bleeding heart bull is that? We need to analyze their "State of Mind?" GEE, maybe they just thought they were letting this selfless and kind couple's inner beauty out when they butchered them...we don't know. Who cares what they were (or more likely) WERE NOT thinking-acts not thoughts killed these people.

"State of Mind" SO freaking what? Does anybody believe Charlie Manson's "state of mind" should have played a hand in whether or not he went to prison. I'm sure you believe he had a bad child hood and should have gone to a state mental hospital, or perhaps a nice hospice.

I say let there be an island for murderers, rapists, pedophiles and all the scum of the earth that wants to hurt people and take what does not belong to them. Drop them by helicopter and let them do to each other what they will. No need to feed or shelter them and no need to kill them. They can find food and make shelter from the stuff on the island.

Posted by: mike at July 15, 2009 1:26 PM

I believe in the death penalty and think it should be used more often actually. I don't support it because of scripture, but because I have had family members fie horriific deaths at the hands of people with no regard for human life. I think putting people like them to death is protects the public.

Dip them in chocolate and feed them to the autistic children, who may then amuse themselves with the bones from which they may show their industry through the construction of wind chimes and whistles.

Posted by: Lester at July 15, 2009 2:20 PM

I do not believe in the death penalty! I think you can make a living hell on earth for people like these and let them take their own lives. As far as scriptures, well that was all writen by man long long time ago when a simple thing like an eclipse was veiwed as some tremedous tragedy about to take place. Noahs Ark, sorry global warming or meteor impact. My God doesn't believe in any of that crap! My God's really really cool and no need to fear him like they do in the Old Testament. You might even find out your God was just a simple DNA expirement conducted by Aliens. Makes as much sense if not more than the bible.

Posted by: Dee at July 15, 2009 3:15 PM

$800,000 dollars for an execution a box of bullets in $30 bucks or less, and that gives ya 20 rounds. do it the old fashion way.

Posted by: mike at July 15, 2009 3:20 PM

You people are hilarious. You all talk of an eye for an eye...so if these murderers should be executed for killing, and you all want to be the ones to kill them, by all means you should then be killed for killing the killers. Do you see where I am going with this? We teach our children that killing is wrong, but that it is magically ok to execute a murderer. No wonder some people have morailty troubles. The death penalty is also a cop-out for these people. Some of the men and women on death row are not thinking about and being remorseful for their crimes, and why should they when they are just going to get killed? Abolish the death penalty, let them sit in prison and maybe, just maybe, some of them will actually pay their debt to society.

Posted by: Dragonlore at July 15, 2009 3:20 PM

How bout we have a lottery to determine their fate. If you win you get to decide. The state will easily make the money for either their lifetime confinment or execution with money to spare.

You even get to throw the switch.

Posted by: lottery at July 15, 2009 3:41 PM

How much do you think life in prison costs that state? I'm sure it's a pretty penny. I say fry them up. Let God decide where these guys end up.

Posted by: Robyn at July 15, 2009 3:54 PM

So what will it be? Put these devils up in a rent and chow free motel room, or do what is best and have a swift public execution, slow deaths, while the horror is still fresh in the minds of the masses. I will guarantee you that it will get every thug's attention. Thou balless government. Thou greedy law makers. Do something right for just once in the interest of good law abiding people. Show these types of scumbags what will happen to them for the evil which they are certain to do, unless you teach them the lesson of justice and fear. Whoever is against what I teach should be their very next victim!

Uhm... 800,000 to kill someone? Looks like someone ought to investigate THAT! A needle and some rat poison shouldn't be more than about a buck fifty! And that is ALL these cold, heartless murderers deserve! Sure - give them a trial. Let a jury of their peers find them guilty first. Then let it be DONE. Who the heck wants to clothe, feed and CARE for them for any amount of time? NOT me and NOT my tax money! Use MY tax money to get RID of them!

The guilty parties should be released after a nice round of rehabilitation. Maybe they can earn a nice trade, like welding or flower arranging. As far as why they committed the crime, I'm sure it's because nobody took the time to just hug them when they were young, and it has rolled over into their adult lives. I'm sure they're "sorry" about executing those nasty rich people...

Posted by: BP at July 15, 2009 9:06 PM

Ed, my sister was killed in a car accident 11 years ago, and ten years ago I did forgive the driver. I found compassion and resolution. I would feel the same way with a child. It may take some time, but I would forgive. For everyone else that is for the death penalty, this is where the vicious cycle begins and does not end. And, as history has already proven, killing a criminal does not get the attention of other criminals. If it did, and if they really thought twice about the consequences of committing a crime, there would be no more criminals, no need for jails or prisons, no executions, or any of that. We unfortunately have all of those things. Does it mean we have to resort to utterly barbarian ways and take the easy way out by disposing of them?

Posted by: Dragonlore at July 15, 2009 9:28 PM

K:
1: To the person who hears God: "When a person talks to God he is praying, when God talks to the person he has scizophrenia."

2: To the murder is wrong debate: Those people killed, the victims... that's pretty low. I mean geez, why should this even be up for debate. Is it really so hard to believe that people deserve death? Goll. It's sad that people can even think of sparing murders like that. I would accept nothing less then the death penalty for the murder -especially with the couple's kindness towards those children- of those two.

3: Lastly to the person who wants to kill illegals... Um I somehow doubt this has anything to do with illegal aliens.

4: I noticed there is no mentioning of being dressed as ninjas, which sadly enough is what caught my attention. I was figuring it was some deranged person who did it.

5: And finally; it's not too hard/expensive to execute someone for their crimes. Sadly people seem to think it's more efficient to let them rot in prison. How many murders was it? Grab a gun and that many bullets +1. If you want a more fitting way, Seppuku for the ninja-wannabes.

Posted by: Perraith at July 15, 2009 9:31 PM

Oh, and Lester...I DESPISE your comment about feeding them to the autistic children. What a racist and unbelievable thing to say. I know several autistic people, and they are actually very intelligent. I am appalled that you have regulated them to making whistles and wind chimes.

Posted by: Dragonlore at July 15, 2009 9:42 PM

The cost to fry/inject has to do with all the appeals and the DNA testing, etc. The legal system is what eats into the cost of death sentence, not the actual chemicals. Drop 'em off in the middle of the Atlantic with a few cuts on each arm and leg and see if God has mercy on their souls or if a shark decides their fate. I think a swift justice is the deterrent and a public execution of justice would be more of a deterrent. Killings are just thrown around like jaywalking inside the criminal circles and it guarantees them a better life (3 hots and a cot)than many would have on the outside. HARD labor for lesser sentences would give incentive for the miscreants in society to not see jail as a solution to their inability to survive socially, economically or motivationally

Posted by: Mike at July 15, 2009 9:53 PM

The simple fact is that they should pay with there life! Its not about God or not God, Its about what is right. And what is right is if you take a life with the intent to murder that person, then you should also die. Mental or NOT. PAY THE PRICE!

Posted by: Troy at July 15, 2009 10:09 PM

Used to believe in the "Death Penalty" but now I think "Life in Prison Without Parole" is more fitting for such [or similar] heinous crimes.
First, it affords the guilty party no recourse - no endless appeals, no candlelight vigil by well-meaning-but-misguided-random-strangers, no last-minute call to the Governor...
Second, it saves the State thousands of dollars.
Third [and my personal favorite], decorate his/her cell with pictures of the victim and - every holiday, anniversary, etc...- require the prisoner to write a letter to the family of aforementioned victim, acknowledging the occasion, every year, year after year after year...

Posted by: jan at July 15, 2009 10:56 PM

Hard to believe how low people can sink. I would say dressing as a ninja and killing poeple was just as much the motive as money. these people were pathetic losers that longed to be a part of something. I realize they were not actual ninja or they may have never been caught. If someone killed a member of my family I may dress up like a Marine Corps sniper and put a 308 round through his brain on his way into the courthouse.

Posted by: patrick at July 15, 2009 11:24 PM

I love hearing all these different views about religion. It just proves that none of us know anything about God. Even the men who wrote the Bible hundreds of years after Jesus supposedly lived did not know anything about God. They sold allot of books though.
As far as these cowardly murderers go, I feel that they should have a fair and impartial trial. If proven guilty they should be shot by firing squad immediatly and it should be broadcast on the national news. Their remains could then be food for earthworms. Punishment should fit the crime and serve to make others think twice about committing a violent crime.
Want to hear how I think rapists should be punished?

Posted by: Underpants Gnome at July 15, 2009 11:24 PM

Isn't it pathetic that instead of worrying about the children and who will take care of them, we come to arguments about God, the death penalty, a blame game, and petty arguments with eachother. Our morals and focus in this country has gone astray. You are part of the rabble. Some day a great rain will come and wash you off the streets.

Posted by: distracted cows at July 16, 2009 1:09 AM

The only thing these men should be tried for is dressing up like a ninja and using a gun. They should get some form of pardon because they tried to be ninjas. But ninjas don't use guns, duh.

The bottom line is the children lost out on a loving, caring, and giving parents. I rightly do not give a Sh@t what happens to the dirt bags. They will get what is coming to them one way or another. The children are facing a situation I am sure they do not understand and I am concern what the state will do to them. I hope the situation turn out in favor of the children finding a loving and caring home/homes.

Express line to the execution chamber.

Don't bother with a new needle, they won't live long enough to contract any disease.

Better yet, box of .22 rounds is only 1-2 dollars, and we could do 50 executions with just one box.
