Boy Finds Gun in Drive-Through

Get your heart pills before you look at this one. A boy in Las Vegas was riding together in a car, and during an idle moment when they were sitting at the drive-through. The boy's curiousity got the better of him and he began playing with the gun, and accidentally shot himself in the head, at which point his father immediately rushed him to the hospital.

It seems the boy is going to survive, thank goodness. Was the father in the car the whole time, or had he stepped out, is not clear to me at this point, hard to imagine how you could be right there in the car and not be paying enough attention to see he had picked up a deadly weapon. Not to mention the essential question of fwhy was this deadly weapon within a child's reach?

Hopefully the boy will recover so that it can be a lesson learned, both for his own family and everyone who reads it.

Las Vegas police are investigating how a 5-year-old boy apparently found a gun inside a car and accidentally shot himself in the head. Police say the boy and his father were going through a drive-through window at a Walgreens on Monday night when the boy found a gun.

Posted by: ed at July 23, 2009 6:23 PM

Why did the father have a gun in the car in the first place, and where was the gun when the boy found it?
Under the seat, in the glove box, or sitting on the seat next to him?
Sadly, some people don't teach their children gun safety from an early age. When I was that age, if I tried to touch my dads guns, I got my hands slapped or my hind-end.

Posted by: Stacey at July 23, 2009 6:29 PM

i dont blame the dad at all. why was the kid looking for stuff in the first place? and he is obviously old enough to know a gun can kill you. i think he shot himself on purpose. dumb kid

Posted by: ashliegh at July 23, 2009 6:32 PM

what most of you fail to see is that this is a tragedy and our concerns should be of the child, his family and not the (stupid)mistakes made.

Posted by: Lavoris at July 23, 2009 6:32 PM

the kid was five years old he didnt know it was real

Posted by: Anonymous at July 23, 2009 6:32 PM

Jeff your a friggin ass hole. how dare you say that, Hes a kid, he probably didnt get taught about guns, he probably thought that it was a toy. So pull your head out of your ass and shut the hell up.

Posted by: Anonymous at July 23, 2009 6:33 PM

What is wrong with you people!! The kid was only 5 years old. It WAS/IS the responsibility of the father to make sure his child was safe. Don't say "dumb kid", this is a small child that may never have been taught about the dangers of guns.

Posted by: Anonymous at July 23, 2009 6:37 PM

I feel bad for the family involed in this. I have been shot three times twice in combat And I shot myself in the arm with a gun I knew was empty. this shit happens and its sad. I dont think the father should be punished he is allready going to live the rest of his life with this.

Jeff...May you accidentally shoot yourself in the head , suffer a long, lonely, painful death before you rot in hell you son of a bitch! I seriously doubt you have kids, probably because nobody is stupid enough to get involved with an asshole like you! Fuck off and burn in hell Idiot.

Posted by: jackie at July 23, 2009 7:00 PM

Jeff..may you accidentally shoot yourself in the head before suffering a long, lonely and ever so painful death. You obviously don't have kids to understand that it is a parent's responsibility to keep their children safe. Sure you don't have kids 'cause I doubt anyone is stupid enough to get involved with an idiot like you! Hope you burn in hell!

To all of you who have posted rude comments about a child shooting himself should be ashamed of yourselves imagine if that was your child and you having to see that for yourself, OBVIUOSLY your parent's have taught you NO MORALS.. My Heart goes out to the father and mother and the rest of the family...

the father was really stupid for leaving a gun where a kid could find it. it's called common sense, not that complicated. the dad deserves what he got.

Posted by: small person at July 23, 2009 7:34 PM

the dad has to live with this the rest of his life. it is a shame people have to learn about gun controll at the price of a five year old life

Posted by: mike at July 23, 2009 7:47 PM

Many of you (ahem, with less than average intelligence) see exactly what you 'want' to see, not what really happened.

A man was being irresponsible, his irresponsibility caused his son's death. It's tragic indeed.

Are guns at fault? NO! Guns are our 2nd amendment right... get that? A right. Of course with anything there is something called responsibility, which this man obviously didn't have much of.

More people die in car wrecks each year than die from gun accidents, so why aren't there people out campaigning to rid the world of the 'evil' car?

Gun control is more about an agenda, less about guns being inherently evil in and of themselves. What about the Grand Canyon? Similar scenario... a man and his child are at the canyon edge. The father looks away for a brief moment and then the boy accidentally falls and dies. Should we fill the Grand Canyon because it caused this boy's death? Think about that...

Posted by: DeNiro at July 23, 2009 7:48 PM

it was a sad mistake and could have been avoided
by buying a $5 gun lock, thats something that the father will have to live with the rest of his life. maybe by this happening people will realize that it can happen to them and gun safty need to take place, especially around children

Posted by: acy at July 23, 2009 8:16 PM

Posted by: acy at July 23, 2009 8:25 PM

this is a prime example of why we need more orphanages run by nuns in this country...or why some people should be spayed. both might save children's lives or, at least, prevent children from being born into such ridiculousness. anyone else see 2 child deaths related to atv use with kids too small, or the kid who was mauled by the family pit bull? just plain stupidity.

Posted by: juniper at July 23, 2009 8:45 PM

What in the world? All I could see up there was a two minute video of cartoon drawings. Was there supposed to be some video about a shooting? People are writing comments, and there is nothing there. ??????

Posted by: John at July 23, 2009 9:06 PM

I'd bet the boy was in the back seat, so the father didn't know. Why there was a gun anywhere in the car is another question.

I think there's a joke somewhere in here about a drive-by shooting and a drive-through shooting, but it's just such a sad story that I think I'll stop here.

If the goverment would offer people money to go on an extended program of birth control or to be sterilized, less of this sort of thing would happen. Exactly the people that we would prefer to not reproduce would take this money. This father is at fault. He did not have the common sense to keep a loaded weapon out of the reach of a child too young to realize what was going on. There are too many people who are raising children who in reality shouldn't even be voting or driving a car.

Posted by: Terry at July 23, 2009 9:38 PM

put a gun to the father and let the son drive....this man should not supervisor another child.

To all the Jerks out there calling this child stupid you should know that the child died the same day. He was an Autistic 5 year old little boy. God Bless him and his suffering mother. It's the father that is to blame for this. And to all of you that think Vegas is just a Sin City well think again there are real working family's here that don't go to the strip and party and we have normal lives and we are trying to raise our children the best way we can. I am a native from Las Vegas born & raised and I hate the stupid Vegas Comments!

Posted by: Anonymous at July 23, 2009 11:47 PM

I have been shot once, and blown up several times from IED's overseas. So, with that in mind. The child has passes away from a self inflicted wound that could have been avoided. Yes, the father is to blame to a degree, in ref about gun safety and education. I have a safe full of guns (30). My kids know all about guns and such.
How about a little sensitivity and compassion for the father and family. They have lost a child, the father will suffer more than any prison can inflict. He has lost a child, HE brought into this world. To the ignorant people on here....your ignorance and lack of compassion for the family is astounding. MAY you never lose a loved one due to your imcompetence..

Are those of you posting ridiculous comments of this sort along with Jeff & his assinine assumption that a 5 yr old child shot himself on purpose & deserves it, absolute mental defects???!!! I'm disgusted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous at July 23, 2009 11:57 PM

To all the mental midgets posting rude comments regarding the child involved in this incident-grow up- really and get a life. This was a horrible accident because it could have been avoided. You cannot blame the gun. Whatever the father is charged with it cannot be as bad as what he's already lost

When are you all going to quit feeding off the idiots on these post? such as the why didnt kid die comment. it was kids fault looking around comment etc!! and comment with those of us at equal IQ levels! All they are doing is trying to start shit instead of intelegent convo over subject matter.

Yes the anti gun left winged nuts will use this as a poster child for taking our rights. It drives me nuts...it is gun education not taking them away that will help our world...I had gun in hand and would be out hunting alone at age 8 shotgun only at 11 I got to use rifle and 14 for my first pistol..On same token I wouldnt let my 11 year look at a gun....not literally but he has been raised in the city as i was a country kid...My children are tought the importance of gun rights, how to use etc but hand on they are clueless compared to me at their age!!

I agree this is a sad story and thoughts and prayers should be with family!! Dad needs his ass kicked, and i am sure he is doing enough of it to himself that nothing else could compare to...I am sure they will charge him and all that....annd for what to detour a dumb decission??? i mean the guy will pay in his mind forever there is nothing the court can do that his mind isnt doing worse...should be assed as a fine and that is all..///. Poor Family God Bless them

Posted by: Gerald at July 24, 2009 1:24 AM

I feel for the father but,he shouldn't have had the gun in the car ir anywhere else for that matter so his son or any other child could find it. I taught my son gun safety a long time ago just like my dad taugh each of us kids. My son knew what a gun could do to someone and was a responsible gun owner. He is dead now but not from a gun but rather a DRUNK DRIVER. If he were here today he would tell you to learn gun safety and responsibility. Dad is guilty of negligence.

Posted by: judy blickensderfer at July 24, 2009 1:47 AM

You should never travel with a loaded gun. If the gun was not loaded this would not have happened. I have heard of hunters who have put a loaded rifle in the trunk of their car and the gun has gone off. A child of any age should NOT have easy access to loaded weapons. The father should never be allowed weapons again. If this child did die a day or two later now the father will have this on his conscience for the rest of his life. Images of his son will be there every night he goes to sleep. I hope others will learn from this. http://free-ad-submission.com

anyone ever heard of the chaos theory? anything bad that can happen will happen to you on a long enough timeline all you can do is plan and caution against it. the father is an idiot i have no sympathy for him you leave your kid alone in the car with a loaded gun what the f%$K is wrong with you, yeah he'll most likely be fine now we see what happens when you bet on most likely. whoever said that it was the kids fault needs executed asap like in their front yard or something. of course he did something dumb THATS WHAT KIDS DO! your supposed to you know....not be retarded and gaurd against that by gee idk, not leaving loaded guns in the car? maby? just an idea. r.i.p kid

First of all if you are going to make a comment read the article first. The boy did die he was a five year old Autistic boy who could not speak. His father has been arressted for felony child endagerment. I do not knw why Tammy says we should feel sorry for the kids father as he is the one that let this happen. He left the gun out in the center console of the families car with the child sitting in the front seat next to him. To bad this kid did not shoot the father in the head instead. i am not sure about anyone else that is on here but where i live children that old are one supposed ot be in a car seat and two in the back of the car not the front seat. This is one of those parents that does not deserve kids as they do not know how to keep an eye on them.

I usually do not respond or post on things like this. With me being a father of a two year old son I feel sympathy towards the family. But I'd be damned if I would have a loaded gun with me. I have no use for guns and it is common sense to me especially with having a son. The father was not thinking at all. He'll suffer worst for it the rest of his life. But in response to Emma, I hope you die. He was a fucking 5 year old kid. They do stupid shit all the time. But it is the parent's responsibility to make sure that they don't do anything that will be life threatening. And seeing as how you think the kid was retarted show's to me that you for one lack judgement, have no experience in that sort of thing... probably just a retarted kid yourself.
