Why Vice Magazine Sucks
Vice magazine has always rubbed me the wrong way, but I could never quite articulate why (other than the obvious debts they owe Ego Trip). This post at The Antic Muse, however, may have hit it on the head about Vice and their head honcho Gavin McInnes:
"...McInnes's play for hipster aloofness exemplifies a certain strain of cool "humor" which turns political argument into a rigged game: Say something offensive, wait for folks to react in their silly, earnest way and -- ha ha! -- joke's on them for taking you seriously. The whole thing is designed to reinforce ironic distance as the ultimate reaction; any attempt to engage with culture or politics at any level other than sarcasm is just, you know, square."
Too bad I discover this blog just it goes on hiatus. I found it via Sasha Frere-Jones, who offers no means of contacting him anywhere on his site, unless I missed something?

I don't really mind Vice, but it is pretty tasteless. Ego Trip was serious heat tho. Damn I miss that rag.

Sasha has an email under the heading "contact me." It's light colored which is hard to see on a white background but it's there.

I once asked Gavin, "Who said there is no such thing as bad publicity?" And he knew the answer.
I have heard a lot of complaints about Gavin, and I think there are a few things that should be cleared up. First, Gavin is a great publisher, but a miserable writer. Second, Gavin is from Canada and I don't think he understands our racial situation. He thinks it is a matter of "talking it out" and desensitizing ourselves. Also, Gavin seems primarily interested in taboos and shocking people. Third, the quality of Vice writing has fluctuated wildly over the past 10 years. Finally, I definitely want to say that I have read some of the funniest shit ever in that magazine (esp. circa 1998-2000). Also, they have been championing underground hip hop for a long time now.
I felt the need to defend Vice, because they have re-written a lot of the rules in magazine culture and they are also one of the few magazines that has showcased legitimately "experimental" writing.

I heard Jurassic 5's Producer "Nuwmark" was not claiming his newborn halfblack child. I got this news from a very reliable source, who was at the Amoeba Club in Los Angeles California on May 14. He saw him get served his legal papers at his album release. I reeally really hope it isn't true 'cause I met him once and he seemed like a very cool, normal stand-up kinda guy. Have ya'll heard anything on this?

Actually, VICE magazine is not an "experimental" magazine. It's a rip-off of the UK's male-orientated gossip magzines.
Gavin is on a mission to define what is 'in and out' and in doing so, excludes himself from any excuse that he's 'tackling' the racial situation whether it be through 'desensitizing' or 'shocking.'
Im my honest pure unadulterated opinion, Gavin harbors dislike towards people of other colors and hides behind his obviously blatant dislike through a curtain of sarcasm and irony.
I don't care though, VICE magazine will tank. It only rides on the wave of 'coolness' and more people are realizing that it's a laughable publication with nothing more to owe it's popularity to than its 'Dos and Don'ts' section.
