Sorry to weight back in, but i gotta defend “The Swope:”

Though folks don't realize it, “Putney Swope” was a precursor to the Black film explosion of the seventies. Robert Downey, Sr. doesn't get the credit i think is do him for this film. I simple thing like the bubble bath scene was lifted by Gordon Parks, jr. for “Superfly.” I hear everyone from Samuel Jackson to Eddie Murphy to Dave C. want to remake it.

But to the point – “Putney Swope” has all the indicators of those seventies films. The hero beats the establish power at its own game. The hero gets the girl. Okay, so the hero doesn’t have his own theme song (neither did Sweetback) or have an established Black music giant for the score and all.
The film does have more than a few Black Archetypes – in “Swope” one can literally loose count of all the different types of Black folk, not to mention a couple of strong female types. Shall we mention the many super fine women of all hues… I mean the film even has small people and Asians in non-stereotype power positions.

On another point (got this info from the directors’ commentary on the DVD) – “Putney Swope” couldn’t get a distributor to save its life; (Re: We don’t know what this is, but we certainly are not going to offend our clientele with it.) eventually the same cat who distributed innovators like Bergman and Truffaut did the deal.

And i’m not even gonna point out the phenomena of the Black cast putting all sorts of ideas and innovations into the process, much less a Black man kissing a white woman…
