About "The N Word"
I like this anecdote, passed on by my friend Bob Fass:
Years ago I asked Dick Gregory why he used that word as the title of his autobiography, and he said it was so that when his mother heard the word she would think people were talking about her son's book.

Most of my experience with the word (beyond obvious constant hip-hop usage) has come in the form of white people saying it in conversation with me because they thought I was white and it was safe to say it..
I learned a lot about the word through my work with StoryCorps, hearing stories from people who grew up under Jim Crow and such, getting a true sense of the tremendous impact and weight the word had in that context.. I think a lot of younger people are not really aware of the weight it carries for those who lived through that.
