60 Minutes on Future Bay Bridge (VIDEO)

Last night 60 minutes did a feature report on the new Bay Bridge, and how the government is racing against time to get the bridge built before another earthquake hits
California and causes a major disaster on the old bridge that's still being used.

Experts say the current Bay Bridge would not be able to handle a mnajor earthquake, and would lilely collapse. So a new earthquake resistant, entirely new bridge is being built to replace it. But many worry the new safe bridge is not being built fast enough.

Byron Pitts reports from the construction site of the future Bay Bridge where there's a race to complete the new, earthquake-resistant span alongside the old structure, which authorities fear cannot stand up to the next large earthquake. The San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge (known locally as the Bay Bridge) is a series of bridges in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, in the United States. Forming part of Interstate 80 and of the direct road route between San Francisco and Oakland, it carries approximately 270,000 vehicles per day on its two decks.. It originally carried automobile traffic on its upper deck, and trucks and trains on the lower, but after the closure of the Key System, the lower deck was converted to road traffic as well.
