Most Pet Owners Would perform CPR On Pet: 58 Percent

I'm sure anyone who is a pet owner like myself will not find this surprising, but for the rest of you here's a window into our world: According to a new poll by the AP most pet owners, 58 percent to be precise, would perform CPR on their pet...and by CPR I mean mouth to mouth, yes!

If there is a medical emergency with their pet 63% of dog owners and 53% of cat owners they say would go all out to save the animal's life, if it were sick and injured and CPR might save the little creature's life. I have to say, as an animal lover I'm surprised these numbers are so low! Who are all these dog and cat owners that wouldn't risk a little ookiness to save their companion's life?? That's just weird to me. Plus imagine how this feels for your pet! They must be thinking "wow you're willing to have me fixed but you're not willing to kiss me? what kind of relationship is this!?"

And as a cat owner I'm especially disappointed that our numbers are lower than for dog owners. so what do you say, would you go that extra mile for your pet? I wonder how other folks like snake owners and guinea pig owners would answer. For those who say yes, below is an instructional video on how to do pet cpr.

Most Pet Owners Would perform CPR On Pet: 58 Percent

Most pet owners would leap into action for an injured pet, even if it meant risking dog breath by going mouth-to-snout. Fifty-eight percent of pet owners - 63 percent of dog owners and 53 percent of cat owners - would be at least somewhat likely to perform CPR on their pet in the event of a medical emergency, according to an Associated Press-Petside.com poll.

Hell yeah!
I would most definately do it.
And before a human stranger too...
For those that "truely" love their pet, they would do it. I am disapointed that the percentage is lower.. If there's an issue about germs,I say once you've saved your pet with CPR,you can go into the bathroom, and clean your mouth out,and do whatever sanitation on your mouth you want..BECAUSE IT WAS WORTH THE TROUBLE BECAUSE IT SAVED YOUR PET! Have the mouth wash, etc. on hand for whatever you may need... It's your friends life (at least on the pets side he considers you a friend)..This poll better get better numbers in favor of these guys... =(^-^)=

I sure would. Mine have stood ready to give their lives to protect me, why would I think twice on saving theirs? They are like my kids. I wouldn't skip a beat!

Absolutely would, I love my/our animals like they are family. I would not think twice about it. If you are not willing or able to take care of them you should not have them.

My local Red Cross offered pet CPR last year and I am certified in Pet CPR. (I am also certified in human CPR.) I would not hesitate 1 second to save "My boys" if something were to happen.

No i would not, don't own a pet.

My wife tried cpr on our prize winning Great Dane. She had 5 litters of puppies, she was 5 years old. We took her to the vet to get spade and she bled to death internaly. We went to pick her up and the vet tried pushing her out the door. They wanted to carry her out on a stretcher and put her in our car. She died on the floor of the vets office in my wifes lap. The vet had no emergency plan. My wife tried cpr but it didn't work.

Posted by: J.P. at October 22, 2009 6:37 AM

I did do CPR on my pug last year. Unfortunatly she did not make it. I am an EMT so I had a good idea of what to do. My vet gave me a few more tips. I just got a new pug and would try to save her life any way I could if I have to.

Having had an asphyxiation incident happen a few years ago with one of our cats that travel with us, (got her collar caught on a drawer pull in a pet friendly hotel room) where I did in fact perform CPR and mouth/mouth to save her life, I would do it again if I knew the outcome was going to be a good one. You, as a pet owner must make that call and it usually involves a split second decision on your part. The animal has no choice in what is about to happen and therefore is totally dependent on a human to provide the correct response. But, all that being said, I am also certain that there are times that no amount of care received will change the eventual outcome. Ours, fortunately was a good one and a good decision on my part. I can't even imagine what it would have been like to travel with one of ours having died on the road and being an 8 hour ride back to the house to take care of final arrangements for her. Most incidents, like most accidents will happen close to home. We have changed how we travel since then, NO Collars, ever, and always make sure we know where the emergency facilities are located and if there is a phone number for that facility write it down, in case it may become necessary if something shoud happen. Our emergency happened close to midnight in the middle of Michigan and we had to travel over 60 miles to get her the care she needed. Long trip when one is not doing well.

Posted by: Ed at October 22, 2009 7:43 AM

Yes, most definitely. Why wouldn't I ?? In fact I have done this for one of my Dogs 5 years ago. He was chocking on some rib bones that he tried to swallow. He was slowly dying and hid under our deck where I couldn't reach him. I was watching him die ! He was now unconscious . I dug my way under the deck, drug him out like a limp sack of sand, reached in his throat and removed the bones, and gave him cpr. He came back to life right in front of me over the next 5 minutes. I almost couldn't believe I just saved my beloved Pet. Hell yes, I would do it again in a Heartbeat !!

Posted by: Randy at October 22, 2009 7:47 AM

I would do anything to save my dogs' life.I just lost my best friend a year ago October 30 to a growth on her spleen and she was too old to put her through all of the surgical procedures. She was the love of my life. If she or any of my other dogs lives would be saved by me administering cpr I would do it in a heartbeat.

Posted by: Robyn at October 22, 2009 8:19 AM

CPR on a dog would involve breathing into the dog's nose, not the mouth. I have both cats and dogs and would perform CPR on both, though it has only been necessary to perform it on a cat to date [unsuccessfully :(]

Posted by: Rich at October 22, 2009 8:37 AM

I certainly would 100%. Anyone who is a true animal lover should do whatever possible. I once did CPR on a total stranger, and would do the same to any pet. Our pets are our responsiblilty and we owe it to them. They are "our angels".

I teach pet CPR/1st aid for the American Red Cross. It is a wonderful thing, and it is easy to learn. I encourage everyone who has a pet to learn this very valuable skill.

Yes I would and I have. I love all my babies. My children had ducks when they were little. One was having a hard time breathing. I took a straw and gave it cpr

Posted by: Billie Meteor at October 22, 2009 9:23 AM

Absolutely! Our pets are part of our family.
FYI, many fire departments and EMS services are carrying oxygen masks designed just for animals.
These are mainly for use at fires where the animal has suffered some smoke inthalation but they are out there none the less.
(Not recommended calling 911 for your pet, just letting people know they are availible in some areas).

Posted by: Brian at October 22, 2009 9:25 AM

No I wouldn't give a dog or a cat cpr. I also wouldn't follow them around with a plastic bag and pick up their crap. Also all you animal lovers that live in little apts and have all your big dogs imprisoned while you're gone all day are no better than Michael Vick. Poor dogs get to go outside for a few minutes to do their business and then back to prison.
Yes I have dogs and cats. Live in the country and they stay outside.
Some of you folks should put more energy into people, not dogs and cats.
Man, that felt good.

Posted by: mike at October 22, 2009 9:27 AM

Yes, I will do it for my cat and my dogs. Pets will even lose their life for their owner.

I have 4 cats of my own plus I always have foster cats/ kittens in my care and YES, I would without a doubt perform CPR on any of these animals if needed. I can't understand why someone would not try to save an animals life, I just can't fathom the thought. I guess this is just one more thing that seperates us true animal lovers from those who aren't. Nothing surprises me really anymore.

I love all God's animals. I have 7 cats and each one has their own personalities. I have a dog that is a boxer, who cleans herself like a cat. I would absolutely give them pet CPR. Because, I know they would do the same for me if they could. I also help out with the feral cats in the neighborhood by feeding them and giving cat shelters from the weather. I believe God would want us to help his animals, in any human possible way that we could. Have a heart, save a life if you can on Humans and animals. Remembers animals were here first, them man was made. Hugs and kisses to all my brothers and sisters and to my four legs friends.

Me and my sister performed CPR when when were kids (7 & 9) on our pet turkey (yes a small turkey) He was foaming from the mouth and his body was limp. We thought we was dead and we blew in his mouth repeated times. He lived to be a full grown turkey until our parents made us give him up to a friend that had a farm.

Several years ago, my husband performed "mouth-to-beak resuscitation on our parakeet. Pete loved to sit on the rim of a glass and drink from it. He tipped over to drink, fell in and got trapped under a couple of ice cubes. Len took him out, held him upside down, shook him, did the mouth-to-beak thing a couple of times, and he was OK. Pete ran around on the floor while we dried him with a hair dryer. He was fine after all of that.

When I was 16years old my dog ran out into the street after a butterfly and was immediately run over by a car. I picked up my dog and got into the offending car and told her to go to my vet now. Along the way I performed CPR on my dog, not knowing how to do it. Instinct took over, I shut his mouth and breathed into his nose. I could actually feel his lungs open up with every breath. My dog had suffered spinal shock from the accident and recovered with @ %85+ of all his faculties and mobility. If I had not performed CPR he would have died!! He lived a long and happy life and 35 years later i remember it as if it were yesterday.

I love my diabetic miniature dashund. She is 13 yrs old and takes shots twice a day and pills once a day for her cushion. She also has polyps in her nose and I doctor that twice a day. Her medication is expensive, $100 a month, and sometimes more. However, money is not an issue when it comes to my furry child. She has my heart and I have no problem given her CPR if necessary. How is five litters of puppies in five years humane? I don't think any responsible breeder would think that was healthy. Pets should be SPAYED.

I would definitely give my missy mouth to mouth i love love this dog, and even go home sometimes on my lunch hour just to check her, i've also even debated leaving the tv on so she's not so bored at home while i'm not there. when we first got her we left her for a week and went on vacation, only to come back home and see her ill with parvo, me and my partner jumped into action and with medication the vet gave us because we did not have enough money for the visit brought her back by stuffing the meds down her throat and forcing her to drink water. she got better and has since been one of the biggest joys in my life.

I actually did this once. We adopted some tiny kittens we found in a box by the road (seriously). One of them simply went limp while my gf was bottle-feeding him. She screamed, I ran over, and I could feel his heart had stopped and he wasn't breathing. I know how to give 'human' CPR and just improvised - tiny puffs through the nose and compressing the ribcage with a thumb. Couldn't believe it when he gave two huge gasps and started breathing again. I seriously wasn't expecting it to work. We took him to the vet later - apparently, he had some strange congenital rib deformity that caused it to happen. Anyway, we found an adoptive family for him and he grew up fat and healthy and lazy...

After my little CPR he came back, slowly, but he did come back to live to be the ripe old age of 6! I would not hesitate to do it for any critter. They deserve a second chance more than alot of people.

I did this once, too! The dog was supposed to stay in the garage while I took my cousins that I was babysitting at the time to the park for baseball practice. I had to push the button on the wall for the garage door and run out under while it closed. All while trying to make the dog stay inside the garage. The door did not have a sensor that made the door pop back open when it comes in contact with something in the way. Therefore, it closed directly on his back. I freaked and ran to the front door of the house, ran through the house to the garage and opened the garage door. The dog just lay there with his eyes open. He was not breathing. I picked up his head, wrapped my hands around his mouth, covered his nose and blew air into his mouth really hard. I did this three times. When he did not respond I lay his head back on the ground, thinking I was unsuccessful. As I stood there dumbfounded, with the little boys laughing at me, Major, the black lab puppy, blinked his eyes. Then started wagging his tale. He got up and let out a huge belch which made the kids laugh even harder. I was crying hysterically. I really think he just got the wind knocked out of him. I am now and forever will be "Betsey the Dog Kisser" to my sweet cousins!

Of course I would!!! My cat is like my child! I would do anything necessary to save her life!! and shame on the other pet owners who wouldn't!!! Pets love you unconditioanally and you are basically saying you wouldn't save their lives. Why even have a pet if you think that way??

Posted by: Alessandra at October 22, 2009 2:01 PM

I wouldn't think twice, my automatic response would be to do whatever was in my power to help my precious Beagle Gigi who I consider my baby/ best friend rolled into one and she will still hold the place of being my first baby even when I have one of the human persuasion.

When you take in a pet of any kind, it is not different then adopting a child. It is a lifetime committment. You must do whatever it takes to maintain a healthy life. CPR included.
We have had ever kind of pet from dogs, snakes, racoons, birds and kittens. And if need be I would do CPR on any one of them.

I am sorry for those of you that think it stupid to go to such extremes for these extended members of our family. You must obviously have the perfect life! Our pet family rarely talks back or sasses us, they never hold a grudge, they ask for nothing except a bowl of water and a dish of food. For this, we get loved unconditionally, we get the best that our pets can do for us. They forgive us when we have to put them outside because the MIL doesn't like them. They want only to please us because they love us. Oh yeah, we are a big bunch of saps! I would take a townful of saps like us than one just person like you who just doesn't get it! My first horse was a cow, and that cow didn't give one rip that this 5 year old was using her for practice! Ever been kissed by a cow? Now that's an experience you never forget, but then that just don't get it, would never understand it. It doesn't matter if I am gone all day or have been gone a week, when I get home, my dog puts on a 20 min show of dancing and spins, she's just that happy to see me! Heck my own husband has never been THAT happy to see me!

I did perform CPR on our Jack Russell named Bo. He was swimming with my girlfriends son in the backyard pool. He accidently held Bo by the coller underwater while swimming in the pool. I was awaken to this from hearing my girlfriend screaming like crazy. I jumped up out of bed running toward the back of the house. All the while thinking the worse. When I saw Justin and my girlfriend ok, I looked down and saw Bo laying at Justins foot. Bo's eyes were gray and he wasn't breathing or moving. I learned CPR in the army and did not know if it would work on a dog that small. I used a mouth to snout technique. I kneel over an placed Bo on his stomach. I placed my right hand to close the mouth then put my mouth over his snout and gently gave 3 breaths. Then I pressed 4 times on his rib cage area. After about 1 min of this, water came out his mouth. He was still passed out except for now I could feel a shallow pulse and his eye was twitching a little. I started talking to the dog to encourage him. Since Bo was now breathing shallow with little to no movement. I stopped CPR. I put a blanket over him and watched him for 1 hour until he stood up. He moved around slowly the rest of the day. The next day he was good as new. He would not get in the pool again anymore. This technique will work if you don't panic and alot of time has not elapsed. I felt like I was saving a small childs life the whole time. I love dogs.

YES! Many times over, YES. In fact I have performed mouth to mouth on my shiba inu 4 times in 11 years. Then afterward he wants me to sit quietly and hold him. I do it! He asks so very little and he give so very much.

who did they poll that they only gor 58%? I kiss my pups daily & wouldn't think twice about CPR!!!

I've been a police officer for 30 years and believe me. If you saw the kind of people that i encountered on a daily basis you'd know why I say i'd do CPR on an animal long before i'd do it on a person.

Posted by: Tom at October 22, 2009 2:16 PM

I would perform CPR on my dog in a minute. I love her more then life itself. Who has an animal and really loves it would not??? I would question their commitiment if they wouldn't.

I guess it's my age. I've owned several pets over the years, but the one I have now is like my child. The older we get the more idiosyncratic we become, LOL. I would perform CPR on her in a flash. A few germs can be gargled away, yuck, I hope.

Posted by: alur at October 22, 2009 2:30 PM

Can't believe that someone wouldn't let alone, only 58% would. Sad if you ask me!

My husband performed CPR on my dog years ago when she stopped breathing. It worked. I will always be thankful.

I have...Thomas Kat (yes, he was a tomcat)had a heart attack. I got his heart going again, but never could get him to breath again...15 min more with him wasn't enough, but I tried my damdest... at least I know he heard me say good bye and that I loved him. If I had know that was what took his sister, I would have done it for her as well....NOTE: fleas are evil, and very harmful. A few flea bites can and will take your babies away from you....FIGHT THE FLEAS!

Goddness yes!, I did that for my dog last year. I have a Peke and 2 Tabby's, I would not hesitate they are family members. We do it for humans how can we not do it for animals specially our own.

I became an instructor for pet first aid and cpr through Pet Tech. It's a great course to take for any animal lover!

Posted by: karin damon at October 22, 2009 3:06 PM

I already did give CPR to my at the time 6 month old kitten and successfully brought him back without any problems he was the same normal happy kitten after as he was before.

Posted by: Michelle at October 22, 2009 3:13 PM

I wouldn't think twice to save my furball!! If you're a true animal lover little germs from CPR will not stand in your way of saving their life.

Posted by: Kinga at October 22, 2009 3:18 PM

Mike - I'm glad I don't know you. You sound like an angry loser! I love my dog and yes, I would absolutely perform CPR if needed.

Posted by: MaryK at October 22, 2009 3:24 PM

I would, in a heartbeat.

Posted by: rosie at October 22, 2009 3:24 PM

we have 4 cats and a dog and we feed 4 feral cats and we would do whatever we had to do to help/save all of them.

Posted by: Frank at October 22, 2009 3:30 PM

Absolutely! I performed CPR on a baby bunny I found in my yard once. I could never let a living thing die while I stood by.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 22, 2009 3:35 PM

I administrated CPR on my toy pom where he stopped breathing. He got up after a short period of time as if nothing happened. I immediately took him to our vet and found he had a heart murmer. He did end up dying a couple of months later but with no complications until the end. So I truely believe if someone is in that circumstance that CPR is needed I think your instints would kick in and you would do it without thinking much about it.

Posted by: DeeDee at October 22, 2009 3:47 PM

I fished a drowning geiko from the bottom of my pool,it wasn't breathing,so I bounced it up and down in my net until he opened his eyes and started breathing. set him out of the pool, good as new.

Posted by: terry prince at October 22, 2009 3:47 PM

I would do it 100%, my husband actually did once my cat wasn't breathing and he tried he did all he knew to do. Unfortunately she didn't make it i miss her so much. I don't care what people think my animals are like my children I would do anything for them I love them dearly.

The previous postings didn't have such good outcomes and I'm so sorry. My one year old mini poodle got hit by an SUV and received severe head trauma. On the way to the trauma center he stopped breathing and my boyfriend without thinking gave Coco CPR that saved his life. After much healing the little guy is perfect and you would never know he was on death's door. I am so grateful that I still have him with me. He is the love of my life. I couldn't imagine life without him.

I just got a dog for the first time last year. I never thought I would love a dog but it only took a short time before I did. I am 28 years old and I would give CPR to any human in need. Now that I own a dog and love my dog I would also try to save any animals life I could if ever in need. I also think the 58% is lower than it actually is. Or at least I hope so.

Posted by: Jamie B at October 22, 2009 4:17 PM

oh and to the ppl commenting saying that it's sad only 58% would do this... some people have tarantulas, reptiles, skunks, & other gross animals as pets... i don't think anyone would give a tarantula mouth-to-mouth, let alone have any idea on how to perform it... I think any caring pet owner would do it on their dog, cat, etc... but i'm sure that 42% of the ppl who voted weren't talking about dogs or cats...

Posted by: joey at October 22, 2009 4:18 PM

okay for all the non-animal lovers out there..shut up no one wants to hear you're a cold heartless jerk.

My shock led to my inability to act, but, my wonderful husband stepped right in and was able to extract the steak my beloved (then)5 year old Shih Tzu was choking on, and perform CPR to bring her back (she did actually die). Had he not done this wihout hesitation, I would not have had another 10 1/2 years with my beautiful baby who passed on October 11, 2009. She was the love of my life. I can't imagine not being willing to help those who provide us with such unconditional love and devotion.

I have three cats and would not hesitate to give them cpr

Posted by: Anonymous at October 22, 2009 4:57 PM

I definitely would perform CPR on my pets every time they needed it in an emergency situation. I had performed it on my precious cat after she started dying in my lap at home 4 years ago. My fiance helped me with it all to try to save her that morning. Devastatingly, she did not survive it, as she was unconscious/unresponsive while we rushed her to the vet clinic continuously performing it on her in the car that day. She had an undiagnosed thymus gland tumor, possible thymoma, located in her chest near her heart. She was too old and frail to even consider her undergoing chest surgery to remove it successfully, since she was a senior at 17 years old. It caused her to have occasional breathing difficulty, continual weight loss, and eventual heart failure. I would have performed it on my other beloved cat, if it would have saved her that night. Heartbreakingly, she was euthanized by the vet after she started dying in my arms at the vet hospital 1 year ago. She endured a day long struggle with extensive exams/tests/meds and life maintaining equipment by specialist/emergency vets. She had a possible brain stroke at home in her bed, which caused limb paralysis, muscle spasms, vision impairment, and mental confusion triggered by possible blood clots from an undetected/untreated enlarged heart, caused from diagnosed/treated hyperthyroidism and kidney disease, as she was also a senior at 20 years old. I would have performed anything on them rather than allow them to die senselessly by not attempting to help save them at all. I would always perform CPR on my pets without hesitation, whether they were cats or dogs, in case it would help to save their lives.
