YouTube: Online Movie Rental?


Up until now Youtube has always been free for viewers, but now the web video giant is looking into streaming top Hollywood movies for a fee, in an online movie rental scheme similar to waht places like Netflix already offer online.

Youtube has been one of the most popular sites on the interenet for years now but has still failed to make a strong profit, as it tried to rely on an advertising model driven by fre videos. Now it will look into changing its focus a bit, ,and trying to earn money from charging for high quality material. ACcording to the Walll Street Journal, "The agreements would allow consumers to stream movies on a rental basis for a fee. However, in some cases, the movies would be available in way that they have been previously--free, with advertising."

YouTube's quest for professionally created content is about to get interesting. The Wall Street Journal reports that the video giant is in talks with movie studios to stream movies to its users for a fee.That will bring a shift from its free video supported by advertising model, but could go a long way toward helping the site turn a profit for Google -- and possibly change the game for online film viewing...
